Perfect for embittered cynics (like me!),

This review is from: Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr: Affirmations for Cynics (Paperback)
The title caught my eye and after reading only a few lines, I knew I'd hit the jackpot. When I read the whole book, I laughed so hard my ribs hurt, and that's pretty amazing considering I'm a pessimist. This book is the ideal gift for intellectual, sarcastic cynics who have a warped sense of humor. I wouldn't recommend it for the cutesy, 'huggy bunny' class of folks...first of all, they wouldn't 'get' the jokes, and secondly they'd be outraged if not horrified. This makes the book all more fun and appealing to those of us who are amused by the darker side of life. I salute the authors for going out on a limb, and the publisher for not letting politically correct doctrine get in the way of having some cynical laughs.

Instant humor to lighten the soul. Reading our true thoughts,

If you ever drifted your thoughts during a conversation and thought, "I wish I could say what I'm really thinking right now," you need to read this book. Rarely can I listen to a comic or read the funny pages in the newspaper and have a good deep laugh. After reading `Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr` I felt I wasn't the only cynical person in the world who would like to say, "Tonight by moonlight I will rake leaves onto my neighbors yard."

I have turned my copy into an autograph book; I have my friends and co-workers sign the quote that is most like them. My favorite: "Unlike me, the seasons serve a purpose." If that sort of thing makes you laugh, this book is for you... you cynic you!

Do you like to laugh out loud? Then get this!,

Funny hilarity will ensue as you read these maxims for personal growth. A welcome respite to our age of self-help and self-analysis, that nonetheless contains at its core a philosophy of well-being that any twelve stepper or any hardened skeptic could be proud of.

Thoroughly enjoyed these guidelines for daily living. These two authors have combined wit, humor, and complete disrespect to write a sure-fired hit. Like them, I am sick of dripping in sugary sentiments. Hooray for our side. Lots of people on my gift list are getting this book this year! Thanks, Ann and Sarah.

For anyone who has ever been bitter, angry, depressed, had low self esteem, hated your parents, hated your job etc.... This book will help you get through daily life with a phrase of encouragement. We cynics are not alone and it's time we banded together and supported eachother. This book will make you laugh because it's so true!

I keep a copy of this nearby in my office and pull it out for an instant smile or laugh anytime. The quotes are all short simple sentences that provide immediate gratification. If someone visits my office in a bad mood I have them open the book to a random page to find their quote for the day.
A favorite - "If I act incompetent, people will take care of me". I highly recommend this as a gift for anyone who has a sense of humor or needs one. It is clean humor -- sarcastic humor that most people can relate to on an average day. It is a great investment, I've had my copy for about 4 years and have bought over 10 copies for gifts.

Cynicism In a Nutshell!,

This review is from: Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr: Affirmations for Cynics (Paperback)
I received this book as a Christmas gift from a friend. She claimed it was me in a nutshell! I read a few passages to my friends, and I had spoken those same words to people many times. This book is one of the most well written parodies, and deserves all the credit it gets. This gets five stars from me, and I hope this ends up on the bookshelves of every home!

The bold, seductive, mean-spirited hit of the season.,

This review is from: Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr: Affirmations for Cynics (Paperback)
If you imagine this collection of affirmations as the thoughts of every individual around you, you'll swear you have discovered the inner monologue of us all. Contrived as its self-help counterpart, Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr speaks to the socially overwhelmed and the self-condemned. These proclamations ultimately become contradictions of one's own superiority. They both celebrate and declare resistance to the despair of a world whose gauges have been left broken by progress. As the rest of us are dragged into the next millenium, the only ones left to sympathize with us are own ourselves. And thus the shade of humor becomes dark and darker, cornered from attention as we seek to obtain it with complete disregard for everyone. At its essence Today I Will Inner My Inner Martyr is a plea to remain inexcusably human. If the self-help movement has left you defeated, find triumph in selfishness. Every false expectation and ode to self-absorption will resonate each time you utter them. I found myself endlessly returning to these epic assertions of yearning, and self-loathing. From the voice of the betrayed, Ann Thornhill and Sarah Wells serve spoonfuls of truth without the warning label. Their poisonous home-brew of satire leaves me unable to mouth the generic positive affirmations of traditional sorts that neither applies here or in a perfect world. I take satisfaction in the taste of bitterness. Today I will nourish my inner martyr. |
