More About the Author

Roy Lessin came to know Christ at the age of nineteen.

He was led to the Lord by his father, Joseph, who was raised an orthodox Jew in the Bronx, New York. Joseph was forty years of age when he discovered a Gideon Bible in his hotel room in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had never read the Bible in English and started to read in the book of Genesis. When it came time to check out of the hotel, Joseph stole the Bible. He continued reading the Bible whenever he could. As he read the book of Isaiah, God opened his eyes to see that Jesus Christ was his Messiah.

After coming to Christ, Roy attended Bethany College of Missions (Bethany Fellowship) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was there that he met his wife, Charlene. They were married in 1964. After graduation, Roy served as a Christian Education Director and Youth Minister in Oakland, California. Roy and Char spent two years on the mission field--one year in Mexico, and one year in Puerto Rico working in a Christian bookstore.

In 1971, Roy, along with three other Christian men (Dean Kerns, Don Leetch, and Russ Flint) started a Christian publishing company in Covina, California, called Outreach Publications. After its first year in business the company created a Christmas card with the message "When you get right down to it, the only thing that really matters is Jesus." That card was the beginning of DaySpring Cards. Since that time Roy spent many years in various creative and editorial roles bringing hope and encouragement to the body of Christ.

Today, Roy is an active Bible teacher and continues to be involved with DaySpring Cards, serving in various pastoral responsibilities, as well as helping to create new products. He has written numerous gift and devotional books. Roy and Char have two children and four grandchildren. You can find Roy at his blog,

When this little book arrived in the mail, I immediately thought of what we always tell our kids at night when we are tucking them in. If God chooses to bless you with breath to live another day, make it your best! This may be a small book but as they say "Big things come in small packages". Roy Lessin, the author of Today is Your Best Day, is the co-founder of DaySpring, the largest Christian greeting card company in the world and he and his wife are former missionaries (which is near and dear to my heart). Written within the 192 pages of this book are about 60 daily devotionals that will inspire, encourage, touch your heartstrings and bring you closer to the Lord. Each day's reading only takes a few minutes but its words will leave you with thoughts that will last all day. This book arrived about a week after my only grandfather had passed away and the devotion for "Today is Your Best Day: Because of Heaven" was a beautiful reminder that I hadn't said goodbye to my Papa...just "see you later". The words on that day brought so much comfort to my soul when I was missing his physical presence and feeling sadness for my grandmother who is now alone. By far, my favorite devotional of them all was page 131-133, "Today is Your Best Day: Because of What God Says". I think I need to make all the reminders mentioned in this passage into some kind of wall art so I can read them daily and teach them to our children. Just listen to a few of them:

He doesn't say: You will have to fend for yourself. God says: "I will supply all your needs."

He doesn't say: There are things in your life that are too big for Me to handle. God says: "Trust Me"

He doesn't say: I can't figure out what to do with you. God says: "I know the plans I have for you.

Do you remember the best day of your life?

How about your worst?

How does today fit on that spectrum?

Would you say Today is your BEST day?!

I probably wouldn't have said that about any of my days over these past couple of weeks.
Settling in from yet another move.
Woke up on deflated Sleep Number bed.
Couldn't find clothes to wear that weren't crumbled up in bags or boxes from the move...finally did but running late.
A couple of miles down the road from the house the car started making a funny (funny bad, not funny good) noise and vibrating.
Turned around and quickly got to know the local mechanic. (Thank the Lord for the recent referral from my pastor!)
Two days later, kind-hearted mechanic had exhausted all options for locating a new or rebuilt TRANSMISSION at a reasonable price so he called to refer us to the local transmission specialist. (Does the word "reasonable" really fit in that sentence?!)
Today is nearing two weeks in rent's nice and the kind mechanic got us a good rate but the bill for it is ticking up by the day.
Still waiting on final estimate for rebuilding our transmission so we can say, "Just rebuild it already!" (Okay, maybe not quite like that, but there are moments these past couple of weeks I honestly feel like that.)
So, can I say Today is my best day?!

Honestly, yes, now I can.

After reading Roy Lessin's strength-building, Spirit-filled, soul-inspiring devotionals in his book Today is Your Best Day, I can truly say that Today is MY best day for many reasons.

Just a few of the many reasons Lessin gives (after the AMAZING introduction you just cannot skip over...

How was your day today?

With most people, my answer would probably be "good, thanks. How was yours?". Sort of an automatic reaction.

I don't often say that our day was fantastic.

I read "Today Is Your Best Day" by Roy Lessin, Co-Founder of DaySpring, as part of the Moms of MasterBooks Review team.

The Intro is a poignant account written by Linda Ayers Turner Knorr, who was given this book as a gift along with her husband after he was diagnosed with cancer and told he had "three to six" left to live. The couple read this devotional with each other every day....and managed to share this book with over 5000 others.

In the devotion, Today Is Your Best Day Because of Faith (Part 1), Mr. Lessin tells us:

To walk by sight mean to evaluate our day by what we see with our eyes, hear with our ears, and know in our minds. To walk by sight means to allow the "reality" around us to impact our thoughts, our motivation, and our emotions. A larger percentage of the "walk by sight" information that influences us in our day is negative.

There are 59 more devotions like this one....and it seems like every one I hit upon is relevant to me that day.

One of my favorite devotions (thus far) is on page #47, Because of Truth. I would quote the whole thing here, if I could....but don't you just want to read it (the whole book, for that matter) for yourself? Know this, though:

When the lie says, "God is not interested in you," the Truth says, "Cast all your cares upon Me, for I care for you."
When the lie says, "God is against you," the Truth says, "Because God is for you, no one can be against you."
When the lie says, "How could God love someone like you?
