versus
1.0 out of 5 stars $75 Bucks! The jewel case should be trimmed in platinum!
I can't believe these folks want you to pay them $75 bucks and up to hear 1 maybe 2 songs that were popular off this cd, I suggest you hook up with a local DJ and ask nicely to have these songs added to a mix cd he or she could prepare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girl I got my eyes on you, May 21, 2004

Excellent song for dancing on with a nice beat, voice over sampling in the background and great vocal range for the artist. Excellent slow groove in "Your Love's Not True". This CD is a keeper for any true music lover.

It would be nothing short of criminal to give this CD anything other than a 5-star rating. "Girl, I Got My Eyes On You" is the perfect marriage between classic Soul and New Jack Swing. These guys (especially Big Bub) could really sing and were not afraid to showcase their Gospel and Soul vocal roots. Other key cuts on this fabulous album are "Sexy Lady", "You Stood Me Up", "Yor Love Is Not True", "Take It Off" and "Lady". Motown Records obviously had high expectations for Today as they billed them "The New Four Tops" but sadly they recorded only two CDs. Hopefully either Motown or Hip-O-Select will see the light and reissue this masterpiece soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promoted as "The New Four Tops", November 2, 2003
This review is from: Today (Audio Cassette)
Formely known as the Gents (1984), Motown promoted the Teddy Riley produced Today as the new Four Tops. Obviously never reaching those expectations, the anti-drug, Christian boys (Today) were comprised of vocalists Frederick Lee "Bubba" Drakeford, Larry Singletary, Wesley Adams, and Larry McCain, all childhood friends. Their self-titled "positive" debut album, which is carried away by joy and passion (vocals), debuted in 1989, around the exact time other Motown acts such as the Good Girls and the Boys debuted. Today's first release single, "Him Or Me" follows the same route Teddy Riley's Guy went; hard, funky, tumbling baselines, and great hook changes. "Him Or Me" hit No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, but would be surpassed by the second release single "Girl I Got My Eyes On You," which hit No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Today's popularity soon died down as the third single tanked, peaking at No. 34 on the R&B charts, and the album settled at a peak position No. 11. Though very oddly, Today never crossed over to the pop charts nor mainstream listeners in the spring of 1989, but remain New Jack favorites. Today would release their second solid album, The New Formula, in 1992 without the production of Teddy Riley.

The asking price for this CD from these private owners is ridiculous. Granted the group was great, but over $80 worth....pa-leeeze! I feel sorry for the desperate individual who buys at that price.

4.0 out of 5 stars T-T-T-Take It Off !!!, April 15, 2006
This review is from: Today (Audio CD)
This Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin directed debut features the slammin' singles Him Or Me, Girl I Got My Eyes On You (killer bassline!), You Stood Me Up and Take It Off, alongside Big Bub's distinguished vocals. There are some other nice uptempo and ballad cuts as well. It's a very essential New Jack Swing album, and the only problem is that it sounds a tad dated. A reissue would be great.

Either the record company or somebody is doing Big Bub and Today wrong!! You mean to tell me they have no release for either of Today's album and Bub's Comin at Cha album?? You can't tell me that their music is not good enough to put on the market, especially with the garbage out there right now! I'm thinking that Big Bub must've rubbed somebody the wrong way!!
