5.0 out of 5 stars Different but Good
Propagandhi is simply unable to write a bad song. I swear to it. I'm not gonna lie to you, this album is a lot different than their others. The music is a lot more hardcore, but that doesn't mean it's not good. This CD is still very awesome. I think some of the change in style might be to the departure of their old bassist, who did some singing on their old CDs. Their new...

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't think this is the pinnacle of political punk
I don't know what that guy was thinking calling NOFX "political". Anyway, Propagandhi is just the tip of the iceberg for radical punk/hardcore music. In my opinion, they're a little too "Fat Wreck Chord-ized". Before you go leaping to such praise, please check out the bands that made groups like Propagandhi, Good Riddance, and other such new jack...

The music is a lot more hardcore, but that doesn't mean it's not good. This CD is still very awesome. I think some of the change in style might be to the departure of their old bassist, who did some singing on their old CDs. Their new bassist, Todd fits right in though. He even sings on some of these songs too. On most of the really hardcore ones. This is a must have. I've been waiting for this CD for a long time, just as everyone else has, and believe me, it won't dissapoint you. Go gey it, today

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge departure, March 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
Oddly enough I just happened across this album in the store 2 days after it came out, not being aware that the gods of rock had called upon Propagandhi to blow my mind again. I popped it in and grimaced for the first 30 seconds.... then my head promptly exploded.

What you get here is unique. It's kind of a hardcore album... but it's not like anything I've ever heard, it's alot better. The guitar work is scary, I did not know Chris' hands could do that. Back to the Motor League and Purina Hall of Fame sport some rather impressive solos at the end. And Jord has fills to pay the bills.

The ECD feature on the disk is nice, for fans of the band. It has a few short movies about various political topics, including COINTELPRO.

They've honed thier political message perfection, and in the process practically invented a new genre of music.

The best album I have bought since the Supreme Court decided that American votes don't matter, thats for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars nothing better..., December 7, 2003

This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
there is simply no other band out there today that can rock like these guys......no joke, each of their albums has a distinct flavour to it, and i don't think i'm alone in saying this one tastes the best.....the addition of the new bassist (I Spy guitarist/vocalist Todd the Rodd) has helped usher in a new era for these guys and the world is better because of it...anyone who has listened to this cd knows what i';m talking about....for those of you who haven't yet heard it, what the helll are you waiting for? go to g7welcomingcommittee.com and buy this cd/lp...you will be forever changed....in any case, don't buy it here (amazon.com) support the independent co-ops, not these primitive screwheads....

5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't meant to be helpful..., March 29, 2003
This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
This is just meant for me to tell you this and all other Propagandhi albums are just AMAZING. They're so incredible. I'm also going to plug some other bands, if you like this or any of Propagandhi's albums, check out Anti-Flag and Rancid (rancid if you don't know isn't as political but they're still great). If you liked Propagandhi's first and second albums with Johnny Samson on bass, then check out the Weakerthans...actually check out the Weakerthans anyway, they're the most amazing band ever..Prop is a close second. This is not meant to be helpful like I said before, I just wanted to do something to give Prop 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Propagandhi, August 17, 2001
By
This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
Propagandhi loses a member and it definately shows. (yes I know officially John was gone for the last album too, but he still sang on some tracks) So John leaves and it appears he's taken his pop-punk/emo influence with him, leaving Propagandhi with an almost hardcore sound for this album. Definately different, and definately enjoyable. The same political punk as always, but played to a different tune, showing maturity. With Chris screamin away on tracks like March of the Crabs, there's no question about the message being heard. This is a fabulous political punk album and deserves to be in any punk collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Propagandhi's Long-Awaited New Record, February 25, 2001
By
This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
After a nearly five year hiatus from the rock scene, Canada's Propagandhi have made their triumphant return. On their newest effort "Today's Empires, Tomorrows Ashes," (whose title is excerpted from a Mumia Abu-Jamal quote) Prop goes for a more hardcore sound than their previous releases. They replaced their old bass player with a new one who does a lot of the singing . . . er . . .screaming on a bunch of songs, giving the record a harder sound akin to Snapcase or Avail. Of course, the standard scathing political commentary is still the focus of the lyrics. Although the 12 song cd clocks in in just over 30 minutes, you can pop it into you computer for Prop movies, pictures, and political readings. If you have a chance, they are touring this spring with hardcore legends Avail to promote the record and they put on a great live show.

You might enjoy this record if you like: Snapcase, Avail, Backside, Thrice, Rage Against the Machine-esque political lyrics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written but deeply saddening, February 6, 2001
This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
The strong message of hope and progress found in Propagandhi's earlier albums seems to have all but disappeared. They seem to have lost "faith" in their fans and the ability of the priviledged societies of the world to recognize the evils that come of their ignorance. This seems to have stemmed from an increasing social consciousness-- a fact that makes the idea that the only escape may come from alcohol even more sad. To the state of the world today, the fact that "Today's Empires" are "Tomorrow's Ashes" is the only consolation found in this album. The end of "March of the Crabs" represents the tone of the album well: "The fight never happened. The crowd petered out. We all dribbled home. Mission accomplished." The music itself is mainly sad beauty alternating with anger, though their most complex and skilled yet seen. Despite the somewhat lighter-toned Phil Ochs quote at the end of the insert, the album is a thoroughly depressing experience for those of us who had some of our hope invested in Propagandhi's message.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best political punk album of all time...., March 23, 2001
This review is from: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (Audio CD)
The last few years have been some of the best times to be a fan of political punk rock. Bands such as Anti-flag, NOFX and Propagandhi have released excellent albums of resistance. NOFX released their masterpiece The Decline, 18 minutes of resistance that will never be topped, in 1999. Also in 1999 came Anti-flag's New Kind of Army, which also blew me away. However, the best of these albums wasn't released until early January 2001. That album is Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes by the greatest political punk rock band of all time, Propagandhi. Today's Empires features songs of political statement such as Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes, Albright Monument, Baghdad and Purina Hall of Fame that you cannot ignore. The album also features Back to the Motor League, a hard, party song making a statement about the music industry.

To keep it short, Propagandhi has once again mastered the system with their best album yet, Today's Empires Tomorrow's Ashes. If you want to hear some ideas that are consistantly ignored, radical and untraditional, pay close attention to this cd when you buy it. I also suggest that you watch the four short movies on the cd-rom about 4 political activist people and groups, including Propagandhi themselves.

Knowledge is power. Arm yourself.
