3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, but Lacking
This book is well researched and can serve as a wonderful reference for women who don't understand the military. However, it is not so great with personal things. I bought the book believing it would help me to "cope" with deployments, and the rigors of life in the military. It had very little as far coping methods, it was mostly a text book portrait of military...

I have read numerous books for military wives, and this was by far the most informative and helpful! The author provides information that is not even included in any of the other books, such as the many services available to military families (including websites and phone numbers!). Additionally, she addresses the different services offered for familiy members in the different brances of the military. She brings you through an entire military career, from entry to separation/retirement. I frequently use this book as a resource, and my military wife friends are astonished at all the knowledge I have. My husband even learned things he didn't know after being in the military for 8 years! This is a must have for military wives, both newcomers and veterans!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of stuff here!, January 15, 2004
By A Customer
I loved this book! There are a lot of "wives" books out there, but this one is the granddaddy (grandmommy?) of them all. Unlike the others, which tend to just cover one area (like deployment) and dwell too much on personal stories that really don't help me, this covers all aspects of military life and gives so many great, practical tips! If you're looking for a lot of facts, go-to places, and wife-to-wife tips, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource, October 22, 2005
This book has both historical and practical info. I loved it. I don't understand the comments that say you can "get the info for free on base." Where on base? That's the point. As a new wife I don't always KNOW where to get info, but as a SMART wife, I research where to get it. Part of that research is reading books like this. Maybe other people randomly walk around offices on base looking for info, but I don't. My time is more valuable. Plus, if I don't know what questions to ask, gathering info is harder. The info given was deeper and more thorough than the cartoon pamphlets given on base, anyhow. The author has done all this legwork for me and put it between two covers. That's worth the money to me. Besides, all the quotes from experienced military wives aren't found in base pamphlets.

I appreciated the book's objectivity. I sought a reference, not a novel. And I got it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners, September 13, 2004
This book is a very good resource for those military wives who don't know much about what they have gotten themselves into. It breaks it all down from how to budget to what to wear at a tea. It caters to all branches of the armed forces, not just the Navy as other reviewers have noted. It is definitely a good starter book. Pick this one up but keep in mind that it is a good idea to check out more than just one resource when you are trying to find accurate information.
I'd recommend this book to anyone!

Very helpful, full of up-to-date information. I reference it frequently for tips, and the background given on traditions and customs makes for interesting reading. It helps me understand this whole gigantic thing called "the military" that my husband is in. Love it -thank you Lydia Sloan Cline, for writing it!

This book is well researched and can serve as a wonderful reference for women who don't understand the military. However, it is not so great with personal things. I bought the book believing it would help me to "cope" with deployments, and the rigors of life in the military. It had very little as far coping methods, it was mostly a text book portrait of military life.

Also, I don't think I will buy a book written by an officers wife again, just because I have trouble believing that an officers wife can really instruct an enlisted wife how to deal, especially in the budget aspect. Living on 20,000/yr is a lot different than living on 40,000/year... as is living in officers housing vs. enlisted. The military treats us different, so there is no way I beleive that I understand officer life anymore than officers understand enlisted life.

Overall, this book is a great reference. However, it needs to be supplimented with a book about how to deal with things as well. I am now off to find that book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for new wives!, August 13, 2003
My husband will be commisioning in a few months and everything about the military was scary to me. But after reading this book I feel more prepared to deal with the new life that I will be facing.

Good book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars helpful for new wives, February 8, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a good read for new military wives (like me!) who are having some trouble figuring some things out. It's cleared up a few things for me so far and I'm not even that far into reading it, maybe 60 pages. It talks about a lot of things... some history of the military, benefits, services, moving, deployments, etc... for all of the branches of the military. It may not be the best, but like I said, it's cleared up a few things for me so far.
