Editorial Reviews

In 2009, Todd Snider releases 'The Excitement Plan', called the 'Finest album of his career' by The Associated Press and 'Brilliant' by The New Yorker. So, what s next for East Nashville's wisecracking, troublemaking troubadour? A live album like you've never heard before. Part Dylan and Kristofferson, part Mitch Hedberg and Bill Hicks, the outspoken Snider has long established his concerts are more than just a set list. 'The Storyteller', a new double-disc live album captures Snider in his true element; onstage before a rapt audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars CONTENT 5 STARS PACKAGING ZERO February 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Everything the other reviewers say about Todd Snider's songwriting genius is spot-on. He's up there in the company of Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, and those three are in a class all their own.

His storytelling is as funny as a stand up comic's act, making this album a must-have.

And it would get five stars if the packing was not so unacceptable. The cardboard sleeve is so tight around the CD that one of the discs came out looking like a used air hockey puck and skips so bad to be unplayable.

The other disc was covered in some kind of adhesive, I imagine from the packaging. That cleaned off okay, but the disc, too was scratched.

Can we please go back to jewel cases?

ADDENDUM TO REVIEW: I e-mailed everyone (Amazon, Todd's online contact and the label) and all offered to make good. Exceptional customer service from all, but I made sure I was only sent the one replacement! Please do not let the packaging steer you away (although when I got my replacement copy I put the discs in a jewel case just to be safe). This album is a must own!

5.0 out of 5 stars Todd Snider: American Hero March 3, 2011
By MuddyG
Format:Audio CD
This 2 CD live album features Todd backed by Colorado jam band, Great American Taxi. A different experience than Snider's typical solo acoustic set, the backing musicians really allow Todd to, in the words of legendary producer Bruce Dickinson, "explore the space." You will, however, discern very little cowbell on this record. You get so much bang for your buck with this phenomenal release, I actually gave it ten stars, then boiled them down to a highly concentrated five star count for you here on Amazon. Please buy this record, then proceed to rock out with your rooster out.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars--Played With Guts February 18, 2011
By Jeremy
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I didn't think Todd Snider could put together a better live album than Near Truths & Hotel Rooms, but I've listened to Storyteller a couple times through and I think he might have done just that. The stories are unbelievable...the hilarious KK Rider tale, his clever rambling story about hallucinagentic drugs and high school football, his ridiculous encounter with Bill Elliot which leads masterfully into "Sideshow Blues"...but the album also contains some of his best musical work. It was a refreshing change to hear him with a backing band (unlike Near Truths, which is all solo). "Play A Train Song" really stood out--it's a chilling version, very different from the studio one. Also can't go wrong with "America's Favorite Pastime" and all the other classics. A great album, start to finish.
