Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A cheerful antidote to all those stories with the knowing and increasingly tedious moral "Be careful what you wish for," this picture book tells of a pig who swallows a magic acorn and finds all her wishes instantly gratified. One moment she's stuck in her pigpen, the next she's in a tea shop gorging on cream puffs. Soon she's going home with a fun-loving baby who's happy to have a pig riding in his stroller, splashing in his bathtub, and jumping on his bed. When a hiccup brings the acorn out and abruptly ends the magic, the experience turns from jubilant chaos into mundane reality--except that the pig has a new friend. The improbable good humor of the baby's parents under the acorn's spell is something that every child wishes for: things are joyously out of control, the result is nonstop fun, and, in the book's memorable refrain, "nobody minded one bit!" The use of repeated refrains gives the text a wonderful lilt for reading aloud, and Young's ink-and-watercolor-wash illustrations capture the chaos with panache. Carolyn Phelan

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Received By My Toddler, October 20, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Pig Who Wished (Paperback)
The Pig Who Wished has that "something" that appeals to younger kids. My two-and-a-half year old son has requested this book at least 20 times for a bedtime story. He has yet to tire of it, and I haven't minded it either.

The pictures are well done, as they are colorful and cheerful, while being detailed enough to intrigue children. The text has enough repetition to be instantly familiar (which 2-3 year olds seem to like), and at the same time keeps a story moving.

The edition I have (paperback) has strong pages with vibrant colors, like the other books in the DK Toddler series.
