Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Talk about putting readers through their paces-a brisk rhyming text urges kids out of their armchairs and onto the floor for a swift, nifty workout: "Lift that rattle in the air-shake it, shake it, everywhere!" Showing eight toddlers as they clap and stamp and stretch and twirl, Newcome's (Rosie Goes Exploring) tidy watercolor and crayon compositions stress the children's fun and their friendship. Endpapers introduce each member of this ethnically diverse class by name, from Alphonse to Vikram, thereby personalizing the reader's various vicarious gym partners. With activities like "wriggle your toes, crawl like a cat, now lie down and stretch out flat," kids will happily join in. Ages 2-4.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Eight round-faced toddlers, with a variety of skin tones and hair color, line up for a gym class in which they waddle like ducks, swim like fish, and jump like frogs. The suggested activities can be enjoyed whether at home or in a group setting. The rhyming text is simple ("Waddle like a penguin from side to side-back straight, arms down, feet out wide") and filled with suggested sound effects and movements. The illustrations of wiggling and jumping youngsters against vast expanses of white space are pleasant enough, but complement the text rather than stand on their own. A useful addition for toddler times.

My 17 month daughter just adores this book. She joins in on lots of the actions (We especially love to rub noses!)and giggles away at the beautiful pictures. She even waves hello and goodbye to the children pictured on the end papers. Great fun for toddlers and parents.

My three-year-old started enjoying this book when he was about 13 months old. He sometimes just liked to look at the colorful, cheery illustrations of the kids moving around. Often he liked to get up and move, too. Now he and his 16-month-old sister love doing the motions; that is REALLY fun for the family! It's a great book for movement, movement, movement! This is the one book I think most children this age would really enjoy...it would make a great gift for a young child OR expectant parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to see more from Ms. Newcome!, September 24, 2000
By A Customer
Excellent illustrations, catchy rhymes and fun animal motions make this a very interactive book. The toddler characters are identified in the front and back of the book, so that by the 50th reading (and you know you'll get there!) they are like old friends to my 2 1/2-year-old. Definitely a favorite!
