Tofu with Cloves is a coming of age story set in a small Texas town. I liked this book, but I did not necessarily enjoy it. As a former social worker, a parent and now an academic librarian the lives and stories portrayed are all too familiar. The story is well told and well honed. The action progresses without the tedious passages of description often misused by new authors. There is a hint of Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird in Peetie, a preconscious twelve-year-old child/adolescent, who must learn to think before she acts. Peetie must learn that even when you finesse a situation it may not bring the desired outcome. Mix small town dynamics, the complications of biracial families, drug dealer, post-traumatic stress and add to that a bumbling but loving adoptive parent and you have Tofu with Cloves. A good read.
