If you want to be inspired, buy this book!,

This review is from: Together on Top of the World: The Remarkable Story of the First Couple to Climb the Fabled Seven Summits (Hardcover)
I read "Together on Top of the World" in 2 nights - I just could not put it down! Incredible story! The best book that I have read in a while and I'm a voracious reader. Certainly one of the best mountaineering books I have ever read, in part, because it is not just another mountaineering book. It deals realistically and holistically with the lives of two inspirational people - their individual histories, their partnership and love. It's about adventure, highs and lows, overcoming life's seeming insurmountable hurdles, success, vision, goals and dreams. Very motivational! This book has got it all!

I like to read climbing/mountaineering books and saw this on Amazon but kept putting it off because it was written by a ghost writer. I finally broke down and bought it simply because there was nothing else new out there to read. I went into it with little expectations and unfortunately I was not pleasantly surprised. The story is about Phil and Susan Ershler's life together and their pursuit of the Seven Summits. They seem like two very nice, over achieving people in love and I applaud their accomplishments, however I found that the story lacked soul and at times felt too self promotional. I was never really moved by their story and found myself skimming the last section of the book.

What an incredible account of two people growing together in the setting of mountaineering. They were very open and honest with the struggles that they confronted individually and together. The writing made this an easy and enjoyable book that keep me interested with the flip of every page. I finished the book in just two sittings and couldn't put it down. Very different from similar books about mountaineers (e.g. Mountain Madness, No Shortcuts to the Top, etc.). While the setting is alpine mountaineering and the stories of climbs are inspiring, the true story is about two people falling in love and learning how to grow into one.

REMARKABLE STORY - REMARKABLE COUPLE,

This book was suggested to us as not only a mountaineering story but a story of life's struggles. We weren't disappointed but very humbled. This dual autobiography (each taking turns telling their story) was a fast-paced read, taking us from childhood to mountain top, leaving out nothing. A very intimately detailed sharing of two full lives. Color photographs support the many stories and stages in the Ershler's lives.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect out of this book - but what I received was stunning. I have never read a book faster and with more excitement and curiosity. The explanation of events from the two perspectives of Phil and Susan work perfectly together. The book will be an inspiration to all who read it. Whether you have experience with mountaineering or not, it is a HIGHLY recommended read.

Half Way to the Top,
This review is from: Together on Top of the World: The Remarkable Story of the First Couple to Climb the Fabled Seven Summits (Hardcover)
Battles with snow and ice, battles with cancer, and a charming romance. What else is needed for a great book in the outside genre? Good Writing.
Unfortunately, this book is short on good writing. It will sell as well as a book in this genre can sell but it will not become a classic nor even provide many memories for its readers. Ghost written, the heart and soul of this book was lost in the expedition of commercialism. Is it worth reading? You bet. If you are a man with a taste for the outdoors whose significant other would rather go shopping, you will eat your heart out for not having the wisdom of Phil Ershler in carefully using bimbos until you found the woman who would follow you to the tops of the world. If you are a woman who wants some encouragement in following your man, this is the book for you. If you are a fan of high altitude climbing, you will enjoy reading this book. It lacks tension, that force which makes you stay up late turning pages. But the elements of outdoor adventure are there and, after all, those of us who read this genre are used to mediocre writing and passionate about the subject. So, all in all, it is a worthy read

Unusually written, 2 person perspective. The determination of both Phil and Susan is admirable and something to aspire to emulate. The adventure story is just the surface, the challenges off the mountain are the real inspiration. A must read for mountaineers and anyone who has faced challenges with cancer. A book worht reading.Together on Top of the World: The Remarkable Story of the First Couple to Climb the Fabled Seven Summits

Phil and Susan embody the very best of the human spirit... and how unconditional love is defined. Their story (thus far) can be summed up best by Rudyard Kipling: .."fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds of distance run".
A MUST READ for anyone that dares to dream... and love each and every day. Not enough stars to rate this book high enough! |
