Biography

The O'Jays were one of the most popular and successful bands of the Philadelphia Soul genre in the 70s. Thanks to top songwriting and production team Gamble & Huff, they had a string of memorable hit singles, and multiple gold and platinum albums.

First forming in 1958 as the Triumphs, it took a long time for the band renamed The O'Jays to attain success. In the mid-60s they had a number of minor… Read more in Amazon's O'Jays Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back O'jays, September 5, 2004

Even though they haven't been away, this is the first O'jays cd that I've purchased since they left Philly Int'l. Ok, so it is old material dressed up for today's market, but I'll take this over the drivel they've released the last few years. "Ruler of the Universe" and "Hurry Home" are classic Gamble and Huff. The Bunny Sigler tunes are also very good. The production updates by Dexter Wansel and co. don't interfere with the overall soulfulness of the tracks i.e. no rapping, scratching or guest shots. In fact the only cut I really don't care for is the title track. I read the guys went to court to stop the release of this cd, but to my ears it's all good. Hopefully, they'll hook back up with Gamble and Huff and make more beautiful music. Til then the old O'jays are back if only for one cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top quality music, made by a top act., December 6, 2004

This review is from: Together We Are One (Audio CD)
I've recommended this CD to many of my friends who know how to appreciate quality music with very soulful sounds. The famed Gamble & Huff sound takes me back to the 70s and 80s. There is not one track on this CD that doesn't make you want to either get up and dance around the room, sing out loud, or wish for the days long gone when music really made you feel good. Thank you, thank you, thank you O'Jays for collaborating with the famed Gamble & Huff team and bringing it all back. I hope that this will not be the last time that you "bring it", ole school style.

Debbie

5.0 out of 5 stars THE PROJECT MANY CALL 'THE LOST ALBUM FROM THE PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL YEARS', August 23, 2007

This review is from: Together We Are One (Audio CD)
ALL unreleased, no fillers to be found here, just the pure 'Philly Sound'. Many tracks date back to the Mid & Late 70's, but still stands up to many of the current O'Jays recordings. Treat yourself and add this to your collection, you will not be let down by no means. It would have been nice if the Right Stuff label was in business long enough to maybe dig up some unreleased Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The early Intruders singles that never made it to LP and/or CD, and the much talked about Patti LaBelle "Live" project, which has yet to see the light of day (Except for her version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now").
