Book Description

May 31, 1998
Although it's non-fiction, in feel it's an adventure which captures the excitement and drama as a young female Ph.D., with a supportive mentor, a small staff of young women and all the right moves, navigates uncharted waters at a turning point in Canadian social and business history. The story itself is also the record of a significant piece of herstory as this team develops what were then hi-tech solutions in Decision Support, a Merlin-esque area in management theory involving expert systems, mathematical modeling and exotic quantitative methods. These young women rescue their senior management repeatedly as they simultaneously attempt to pioneer a path through an all-male world. Using the power of story-telling to convey life's complex messages as well as exploring the techniques in context, the reader can recognize herself in the role. Part of a new trend in literature-based curriculum and interdisciplinary ventures, the book is designed to be both pleasurable and informative. Token Woman provides young women the opportunity to 'shadow' a management consultant, from her initial foot-in-the-door, through the maneuvers, to the councils of top management.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

How can we give the young women in our lives the career guidance they deserve? Obviously, one-day-a-year visits to our offices will never be enough to fill the need. The most desired option is longterm mentoring. But those opportunities are rare, a matter of luck. Meanwhile we read daily about the loss of faith in this latest generation of young women, how their self-confidence and self-esteem are worn away by the still unbalanced male environment and the unsubtle mixed messages they receive, particularly as they go from high school through college. Researchers are now advocating the introduction of women's history early in our teenagers' education as one antidote for the problem. But the available resources are not going to be forthcoming widely any time soon. What do we do til then? Or is this generation's ambivalence not a failing but a warranted response to the world they see on their horizon? Was the news in '95 of increasing frequency of pregnancy discrimination cases or the recently depressing assessment of pay inequity part of the problem? Where can they learn to find their way in this wilderness of chainsaw economics, political games and power maneuvering? Should they trust the word of those who have no experience in the corporate world or those with a vested interest in counting progress for their own political gain? The book Token Woman: The One That Got Away addresses all these problems and more.

About the Author

The author is J. H. Raichyk, an accomplished mathematician, who knows well the corporate games. She was awarded her Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Cincinnati, with honors, and landed a position as Assistant Professor at SUNY Brockport in spite of the collapse of the job market in her field. Restless over the turmoil in the academic world of the 70's, she found herself an immigrant to Canada with her new husband and infant son. After her adventures in Canada as the Token Woman, she returned to Cincinnati with her children, survived a hostile divorce and changed industries. Beginning again with Federated Department Stores, one of the largest American retailers, she rose within four years to Director of Research Services. Instrumental in riding out the turmoil of the Campeau takeover, and contributing substantively to Federated's remarkable recovery from bankruptcy, she recently left to write and to begin her own small, home-based business, with plans to explore more sustainable lifestyles.

This review is from: Token Woman: The One That Got Away (Paperback)
A surprisingly innovative fictional account, written in the first person, of an overeducated, but chronically unfulfilled, 70's feminist who never gets close to comprehending that her gender may not be the issue. The author deftly reveals the jaded perceptions and narcissistic motivations of this selfish creature. But I felt so little sympathy for the character as the narrative progressed, that I found myself many times ready to toss it in. This book does stand, though, as a vivid testament of early feminism at its self-destructive worst -- or is it just the story of a bitter woman on gender crutches (you be the judge). It is a remarkable first novel and this reader cannot wait until the author turns her considerable gifts to a more deserving subject.
