I just got my daughter's May Lin doll and it is adorable. It doesn't say Tokyo a Go Go anywhere on the packaging, it is actually part of a World collection. It says it is "Far East" fashion. It looks like a blend of Japan, China, and American tourist style - overall well done. And it is just a toy.

It's a Bratz DOLL with the Bratz doll kind of style & my 7 year old had to have this doll the minute she saw it. If you or whoever you're buying for thinks Bratz rule this is definately one for the collection! She is absolutely beautiful & her outfit is cool & original!!!!

Hi im 13 and from japan my first name is Tsuruko but i live in americas and speak english as well as my native language. I know everyone says, 'it's just a doll, get over it', but as she is from the place i come from i was realy upset that MGA could not be bothered to research a pretty Nihongo name for her! :(
Mai Lin, Mei Lin or Mai Lin, however its spelt is NOT Japanese, as japanese people do not have L's in their alphabet (nor do they have c, v or x which Chinese people do have, though not V)! Everyone who reviewed and said that it is both Japanese and Chinese is wrong (I think iknow as i SPEAK it - none else so far has made a claim to that!)!!! I know it is not deliberate but i am very let down as i fond of american toys and was looking forward to owning a kimono or yukata doll to be friends with yasmin, cloe sasha jade and barbie, madson chlesae and nolee (No Lee IS a chinese name! At least mattel are bothered). Also, much detailings on the kimono are false. I have a festival Kimono for when i go Japan annually to attend Sakura (cherryblossom) viewing festivals. She does not dispaly any of the Geisha attributes or hair or makeup styling :( her Kimono is simple and in a very basic style that could even be like the imperial Chinese concubine dresses :( it is not specifically japanese. i have renamed her Sakura, as she has sakura on the gold trim! she looks like shes more from an anime or cosplay as her kimono is basic and unrealistic if your daughter thinks she is a pretty doll i cant see why not buy it for her! Just make sure she can separate chinese and japanese cultures as that is more important than any doll. she is very pretty.

***********i think that is is GREAT that bratz has gone to a new
level...a more mature one maybe? yes!! because this popular bratz doll is from another culture, it teaches every little girl that plays with it a valuable lesson: every culture is different and beautiful in it's own way.. i think it will make a new (small) generation of not racist girls...racism is a terrible thing that happens too much these days, and this doll can help stop it. thanks for reading my review of this lovely doll. GREAT GIFT IDEA!!!**************

hello everybody
I have reviewed before my name is tsuruko and i am japanese. I speak japanese so I KNOW WHAT I TALKING ABOUT. Sorry my english is bad for reading. I am 13 i live in america. my review was called 'it does matter if you know what you're talking about!'. I have learned from a friend here that there are 2 dolls more for the group. they wear the kimonos as well. However, I reviewed here and i said that Mai Lin, Mei Lin or May Lin IS NOT JAPANESE as we have not L's of the kana alphabets. see other review to see why this is so. >:( My friend she says the other dolls called 'Tiana' and 'Kumi' TIANA IS NOT JAPANESE! There is not a 'ti' character in our alphabet! the 't' section of the kana (japanese alphabets) goes ta, to, te, tsu (as for 'tsunami' that you may know. this is instead of 'tu') and then 'chi'! No 'ti'! IT DOES NOT EXSIST! I have chinese and japanese friend. she tell me how No Li (for myscene No Lee - american phonetic equavilant in your alphabet) is true chinese. it may have other spelling maybe Nyo Li (?) or Nou Li so i am not sure if you are please write review and say. Mattel see that she get a proper name! however, Kumi is Japanese. it is our word for 'group'and made from our kana characters 'ku' and 'mi' so it is true. she has a true name! I am happy! :) many people here write that 'oh, it do not matter! Japanese, chinese are all same!' but THAT IS VERY IGNORANT! IT DOES MATTER! Children should care about other cultures and able to separate them to know how they are different. japan and china are VERY DIFFERENT CULTURES, alot more than you think. they have very little to know of each other, however a few things are same for them like kanji alphabet. but that very hard. i dont explain here now. children being able to understand cultures is very more inportant than a silly doll. make sure they knew! I sorry my english is bad reading i learnt it for since i was 8 and i come to america. i learnt a small english at school in japan so i am happy. Thank you for read this! i hope now you understand the japanese and chinese cultures and that they are different. If you want more to know write here at amazon i will tell you please. Tsuruko

May Lin is a great doll to have with the Bratz Sushi Bar. Now Toys R Us just needs to come up with a Collector's Edition Bratz Sushi Chef.

Why the hubb-ub?,

Why all the hubb-ub? I don't care if you've lived in Japan or not, know about Japan or not, or what you think of my review! I am just here to state this to the know-it-alls: It's a T-O-Y! If it were ment to look real or be accurate, it's head wouldn't be twice the size of the feet, the feet wouldn't pop off, the lips and eyes would be closer to the size of the nose, and LOTS of other things. It's ment to look cool and pretty and be fun to play with. Bratz put a modern flare on traditional fashion, and that's what they're about! Here are a few things out to everyone: No, kimonos are not neon. Yes, May Lin is a Chinese name. No, people in Japan don't wear kimonos as regular everyday dress anymore, they wear jeans and everything else like people in the US or wherever(see, Tokyo-a-Go-Go Bratz regulars do). Who cares if May Lin is a Chinese name? I have a very, very deep-rooted German background, but I have a Spanish/Mexican name(Josefina). And the modern twist to old Japanese formal wear is a neon kimono. Native Americans still have pow-wows, but they don't still wear deer-skin dresses and porcupine teeth jewerly! It is a doll, and she is elegant and very fun. I highly reccomend her to anyone, except know-it-alls or Bratz haters.

I don't really see how much a child could really gain from this doll...especially since 'May Lin' is a Chinese name, and she is supposed to be from Japan. ;)
She's very pretty just the same, and since I have a major respect for Japanese culture, I keep her as a tribute to my love of the country on my desk. |
