Tokyo Mew Mew,
By
This review is from: Tokyo Mew-Mew, Book 1/ Mew Mew to the Rescue (Paperback)
I don't generally go for manga with an absolute *overload* of cuteness. However, I had heard of Tokyo Mew Mew and really wanted to read it. So one day, I bought it. Tokyo Mew Mew some may say is a copy of Sailormoon. But there are several differences. The idea of merging endangered species with humans to fight aliens is interesting--the endangered species thing is something new. TMM is quite cute--that's for sure. Ichigo (which means strawberry) is the main character, a cat-girl. Her comrades are called Mint, Lettuce, Pudding, and Zakuro. This manga is recommended for people who like mahou shoujo and anyone who can withstand tons of cute-ness. I liked it, for sure.

I have always wanted to watch the anime "Tokyo Mew Mew" I was more than happy when I bought the first volume of the manga. It may not be the anime, but it's just as good. The artwork is beautiful, and the English translation is very good. The story is about an 11-year-old girl named Ichigo, who is on a date with her crush at the exhibition, and then something like an earthquake happens. Ichigio soon finds weird things happening to her like-when she falls she lands on her feet, cat ears and a tail popping up out of no where, and she suddenly starts having an appetite for fish. She finds out that she was chosen to be part of the "Mew Project", along with four other girls-Mint, Lettuce, Pudding, and Zakuro. (Pudding and Zakuro will be introduced in volume 2) I find this manga to be quite sweet, and cute. If you like cute and sweet shoujos, then you should definitely give "Tokyo Mew Mew" a look!

An awsome shoujo manga!! (Kawaii!!),

First off, Tokyo Mew Mew is a magical girl manga that is just DRENCHED in cuteness. Unfortunately, that probably means that most boys won't be interested in reading it. However, for the people that do read Tokyo Mew Mew, this is an awsome series with loads of cute characters!I've heard that Tokyo Mew Mew has been called "The New Sailor Moon" but I don't know how similar the two series are (I've never read any Sailor Moon manga or seen the series). Although in volume one, so many characters are introduced (The 5 girls all appear in the first chapter) that the characterization is just a teeny bit shallow at this point. However, I'm sure that they will have time to fully develop as the series progresses... In short, Tokyo Mew Mew is a sweet and addicting manga where you'll love most of all of the characters! It's wonderful that Tokyopop has this in right-to-left format! This is one candy pop shoujo series that will leave you meowing for more!

This manga simply blew me away; picked me up off of my feet and flew me to Neverland...only instead of Peter Pan, we meet five adorable girls! This is definately a girlie-manga, with lots of pink and love connections. The characters are to die for, and the way that Mia Ikumi slowly draws you in towards her work just compells me!
If you are into deep, flowing story lines, then this manga is most definately not for you. If you enjoyed Sailor Moon or Magic Knight Rayearth, you will definately enjoy this work, for it has the same elements; magical girls, love, super powers, cute costumes, etc... If you enjoy light, happy reads, then this series is for you! But I do have a WARNING for you! Every manga ends with a cliff-hanger, so you will have to buy all seven books to see the end! I do tell you this, it is money well worth spending, and the lesson taught will stick with you even in your everyday life. Definately a fun read!

Great Manga for Girls!,
This review is from: Tokyo Mew-Mew, Book 1/ Mew Mew to the Rescue (Paperback)
Summary:
Ichigo is a 12 year-old on a date with one of the most popular guys in school (masaya), on her way to buy a drink she runs into four girls (the other mews) and during an earthquake they get hit by a ray containing genes of five different endangered species (iriomote wild cat, ultramarine lorikeet, finless porpoise, golden lion tamarin, and the gray wolf). They don't know it yet but they are the supergirls of tokyo, tokyo mew mew. If you love mangas with adorable characters and romance.....this is a good read. I love the artwork. many people say this is a sailormoon knockoff, but it is far from that. Besides none of them are princesses of planets born with powers....they each recieve them from a ray that was supposed to hit an alien, but it hit them instead giving them powers of endangered animals. Ichigo is like the main character and the other four mew mews are like her supporting characters. But I love the concept. And if you have ever watched mew mew power (the anime based on the books) you might have been turned away from these books thinking it's exactly like the show. truth is the books are way better the only thing the same between the books and the show is that they are mew mews and get hit by a ray containing animal genes. A lot of things are different like the names of all the characters the name of the superheros (tokyo mew mew vs mew mew power) and most of the events that occur on the show never occured in the book.

It Hits 11 on the Cuteness Scale of 1-10,
By
This review is from: Tokyo Mew-Mew, Book 1/ Mew Mew to the Rescue (Paperback)
I came across Tokyo Mew Mew via the FoxBox's airing of the horrid English version of this title called "Mew Mew Power". As I have said in my review of Shaman King, the main reason why it's so horribly dubbed and edited is because of the target audience (kids and tweens). Still, I was hoping that I would grow to like the series as I did with Shaman King.
Well, let me just say on thing: The cuteness level is dangerously high! Just like the amps in Spinal Tap, Tokyo Mew Mew hits "11" instead of your standerd "10". It's right up there with Hello Kitty and Miffy, so if your a sucker for cute creatures and of the like, you'll love this series! With that said and done, the plot deals 11 year old Ichigo Momomiya, who is on a date with her crush Masaya at a museum showcasing endangered species. While there, she and four other girls all somehow get injected with the DNA of five endangered animals. Now possessing the animal DNA, Ichigo can transform into the magical girl Mew Mew and fight off aliens that are bent on taking over the Earth. While the plot for every magical girl manga/anime pretty much stays the same (causing many to shout "Sailor Moon rip-off!"), the idea of the heroine being injected with animal DNA is a nice touch. Seeing Ichigo, Mint and Lettuce struggle with their new powers makes this volume worth reading. I also enjoied the art throughout the book. Mia Ikumi knows how to milk those cuteness levels! I especially love her Super Deformed cast dressed up like cows near the end of the book; they make me grin from ear to ear! But with it's good points, Tokyo Mew Mew does have it's downsides. For one, the Ichigo and Masaya romance felt like it was forced into the story line. I also found some of the info behind Ichigo's transformation a little cheesy (the UMA reference is one example). Still, this is a magcial girl series afterall, so all is forgiven. Now the big question: Have I now become a fan of Tokyo Mew Mew? I can't really say right now, but I can give a more justified answer once I have read the entire series (a total of seven volumes). But from what I have read, it's much better than the anime. Hopefully, future volumes get better as well. So, if you want a magical girl series to tie you over while your saving your money for your next Sailor Moon DVD, Tokyo Mew Mew is the one to go to.

Catgirl saves the day! Meow!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Tokyo Mew-Mew, Book 1/ Mew Mew to the Rescue (Paperback)
Tokyo Mew Mew is a very cute manga for all ages. When I first got this book, I saw the cute catgirl on the cover and bought it. It's a MUST READ manga that has an anime in Japan and is purr-fect for cat-lovers! The story is about a 12 year old girl named Ichigo who is at the museum with her crush, Masaya. Suddenly, her DNA is merged with the DNA of a wildcat. Four other girls have also had their DNA merged too. She is suddenly an acrobat, loves fish and is very sleepy. On the next day she is attacked by a huge rat and a guy saves her. His name is Ryou and he says she(Ichigo) has to beat the monster. He pushes her out of the tree and Ichigo suddenly grows cat ears and a tail and is wearing a pink battlesuit. She also has pink eyes and hair. After she defeats the monster, Ryou explains that she is a superhero and has to fight aliens who are using animals to attack humans. Ichigo then is set off to find her partners and form Tokyo Mew Mew. If you love magical girls and love catgirls, this book is for you.

The First Manga I Ever Read...,
By Elenchus (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tokyo Mew-Mew, Book 1/ Mew Mew to the Rescue (Paperback)
And by far the very best! 11 year old Ichigo Momomiya is at the museum with her crush. After a rather interesting turn of events, she finds herself injected with the DNA of an endangered Wildcat! (But, she doesn't realize it at the time.) As she it hanging out with her crush, Masaya in the park, a giant rat attacks her and Masaya! At that point, she is rescued by a blonde teen named Ryou Shirogane. He soon explains to her that she must defeat the rat, seeing as she is a superhero now. (At this point, she is about to flip out.) She defeats the rat, and soon, her destiny unfolds.
She is taken to Cafe Mew Mew (rather forcefully, and Ichigo, continuosly throughout the volume, calls him a jerk) and is informed she must find the other Mew Mews. The art is absolutel beautiful, and the characters are great. beliveable, might I add. The villians in the series are three conspiring alion, Pie, Tart, and Kish. (Kish later develops a crush on Ichigo, BTW) Mint Aizawa and Lettuce Midorikawa are intruduced as well. The remaining two Mews are introduced in Vol. 2. Ryou Shirogane was also another great character, and in the later volumes his role gets pretty important. Ichigo is my favorite chracter, and she's a girl everyone can relate too. Just your average girl faced with incredible situations, and only with the help of her friends can she pull through. (She happens to be the strongest mew Me wof them all.) All inall, this is a beautiful Manga, and has a wonderful storyline. Believe me, Buy This Manga!!

Cute and Enjoyable,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Tokyo Mew-Mew, Book 1/ Mew Mew to the Rescue (Paperback)
I had looked at these books on Amazon for a while, but I finally got them. I had assumed this would be a great book, and It TOTALLY WAS!!! :) It starts out with Ichigo Momomiya ( Zoey Hanson in the Anime) who is at the Museum with her crush Masaya. Shes not toatlly into the whole 'save the planet' thing, but goes with Masaya anyway. In a freak accident, Ichigo and four other girls, Mint, Lettuce, Zakuro and Pudding, are injected with the DNA of animals! I wont tell you anything else.
When they say this is 100 percent Manga, they were right. i was dead confused when I opened the package to discover it was like real manga. What should have been the front of the book was the back and so forth. Well, after I got the hang of how to read it, it was the best Manga ever! Cuteness: SO CUTE!!! Good Storyline: Yeah! A 9 of 10 I say! Long enough?: Yeah! Much longer than I expected! Clear to read?: A bit difficult if its your first Manga book Good Characters: OH YES! Though I wish Zakuro was a bit nicer...Shes a loner. Illustrations?: THE BEST!!! I love the action scenes! Overall?: As another reviewer said, Hits 11 on a scale of 1-10! Some die-hard-read-them-all-been-there-done-that Manga fans may say that Tokyo Mew Mew is a copy of Sailor Moon. NOT TRUE!! Sailor Moon if way different (But not better. No offense to S.M. Lovers, just my opinion.) What makes them different? 1: Selena and her group are 14 year olds, Ichigo, MInt and Lettuce are 11, Zakuro is about 14, and Pudding is about 7 or 8. 2: The Mew Mews turn into Animal Hybrids, S.M. just get cool costumes and stuff. 3. The Mews can even TURN into their animals, in #4, Ichigo goes full cat! 4: The Mews fight aliens that control animals and turn them into Kirema Anima, S.M. is more of fighting people who steal spirits, or something like that, (I dont know much about Sailor Moon.) 5: The Mews were injected at a museum by a guy named Ryou, not guven powers by a cute talking cat named Luna (I gotta admit, Luna's cute!) 6: The mew mew's enimies are trying to destory nature! Havent you all noticed the dozens of super-teams of 5 girls who stop aliens and monsters> WITCH isn't Manga, but its still a 5 gal super-team! All in all, Tokyo Mew mew is my favorite Manga EVER! |
