Toshiaki Toyoda creates a decent socially awkward movie with one of the coolest stab scense I've ever seen. Some of the dialogue is lame and the pace can be slow. This movie feels like Taxi Driver's mute little brother and has a pretty funky ending. Overall, it had cheesy goodness like Toyoda's other films and I don't regret buying it.

Strong Debut,

This review is from: Tokyo Rampage (DVD)
This is the debut movie for Toshiaki Toyoda, though the 3rd one to be released stateside. It's also been known under the name Pornostar and Tokyo Psycho. Like his 2nd movie, Blue Spring, this deals with the struggles of youth culture and crime, though with a more raw, disconnected theme.
Toshiaki Toyoda reminds me of punkrock director with a very raw, visceral style, but he always splices in scenes of unique beauty amd a pause for reflection (knives in the rain is great!). If you liked Blue Spring or 9 Souls, I'd highly recommend this one! If you haven't seen those yet, you might want to start with them instead as they are more refined films and might make for an easier entry point. On the DVD side of things, it's very basic. No bonus features other than a trailer and small photo gallery, which don't really count. That's a shame as atleast the other films had some quality commentary from Tom Mes of MidnightEye. Image quality is fair. |
