This 2 CD plus DVD box set from shows in Tokyo on December 16 and 17 1996 is a jewel (and includes 3 filler songs that were recorded in studio - tracks 9, 10 and 11 on disc 2 - with a different lineup). The selection is diverse (lots of solo Hackett, some Genesis, some King Crimson, some solo Wetton, and a Dylan classic), and both the sound quality and performances are very good (clunkier and not as vibrant as the originals perhaps, but clean and polished nonetheless). John Wetton is no Gabriel for vocals, but his style fits in well with this material (as does his bass sound). The rest of the line up is (a solid but mostly unremarkable) Chester Thompson on drums, Ian McDonald on flute, sax, guitar, keys and vocals (delightful and a rare treat, especially for the KC songs) and Julian Colbeck on keys and vocals. Steve Hackett obviously loves returning to his roots and was probably pretty happy with this band, even if he often sounds the most lively of the group (other than McDonald). The DVD shows the same set of songs, and pretty much shows a well filmed no nonsense concert, with plenty of opportunity to see Hackett's consummate technique, - what a great bonus!

This concert was the outgrowth of the first Genesis Revisited sessions which had been recorded earlier in '96, and some of the interplay between these same accomplished musicians is extraordinary ("Court of the Crimson King"). It has a lot of cover tunes done as straight covers, but there is also enough reworking and improv to make it interesting ("Firth of Fifth", "Black Light"). Perhaps though, my favorite is just hearing the solo guitar on "Horizons", so gentle, so nostalgic!

Good to hear the older Genesis tunes redone by Steve.
