3.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre Japanese "pink", September 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tokyo X Erotica (DVD)
It's a bizarre Japanese "pink" flick (as bizarre as most of them), and worth watching if watched in the right mood and with right expectations. Amazon's product description is obviously cut-off, which might have thrown off some of the viewers. A more complete product description can be found for the following old release: Tokyo X Erotica [Japanese Pink Cinema Collection].

This is a classic "pinku" ("pink"). Japanese "pink" movies are almost always low-budget, and "soft-porn" by definition, and what distinguishes them from any other soft-porn, are some artistic devices, use of colors, and sometimes some message or resemblance of plot.

This movie is mostly shot in light red colors, with some documentary inserts in black-and-white. Why is it called "Tokyo.."? Because a number of random people who live in Tokyo were interviewed in Tokyo streets, and asked the question: "What is longer: life before or after the Death?". The red background works rather well to convey the message of the movie. The message / plot is best conveyed by the God of Death, who comes to a few people in the movie in their dreams, to alert them about their death (or death of their beloved). That old man in pink costume is the God of Death, as seen in a dream of the central heroine. He first has sex with the heroine's boyfriend (hence, the only short homoerotic scene in the movie) and then with her, "marking" both of them for death. She asks if she can change her life before she dies, or if everything is already pre-determined. He answers that he doesn't have a control over human lives, as Death is just a final port/destination, and human lives are ships in the sea going to that final port. There are a number of other subtle nuances and artistic symbols in this movie.

Sex scenes include: 1) A final act of a female prostitute with her client, him wearing a pink bunny suit (at first, before he disrobes), making her masturbate, rim him, etc. Regular sex between the two is also included. 2) SM-ish fairly hot scenes between 2 unrelated characters. A male knows Japanese bondage (kinbaku, or "shibari") quite well, and him tying up his lover (with an aesthetically pleasing to an eye black rope) made her come, in quite a realistic fashion. Probably one of the best scenes of the movie for me, but tastes differ. 3) Threesome: one men, two women, regular sex. 4) Short homoerotic scene I described above. As you can see, the movie throws in a lit bit for everyone, so it will work only for an open-minded viewer, with the taste for bizarre.
Unfortunately, due to Japanese censorship laws, no male frontal nudity is allowed in this movie. Female frontal nudity is shown, but only "from afar".

I think two previous reviews are somewhat misleading. One of the previous reveiwers disliked the movie so much obviously because of its short homoerotic scene. The other wanted to see more of Tokyo's erotic "sights" (?? strip-bars?) As I mentioned earlier, a number of random Tokyo people were interviewed during the movie, which in my opinion explains its name. Also, all the "action" happens in Tokyo. It's not a documentary, after all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well, uh.., June 10, 2008

Wow. I'm embarassed that I actually own this dvd. It looks like it was shot with a handheld camera, but that's not the main problem. The main problem is there is no coherent plot. Throughout the movie the question: 'is the time before death or after longer?' repeatedly pops up. Sounds deep. If only we could get some coherent answers to this pressing question, or at least, something that makes sense. Unfortunately, a man dressed in a pink bunny suit, and later, another dressed in a superman costume fail to provide that. Fortunately, there are several scenes featuring waterguns shooting...white stuff (Symbolism?)...to further confuse the issue. Oh, and the sex. If only the director could have managed to make it less laughable or just managed to film it properly at all. In one of the scenes he basically films the bedside candle the whole time. What? I almost threw up in my mouth a little at the ending that had old pink-bunny-suit-man-with-one-giant-gold-earring in bed with the younger guy. Gag.
