Lifeless and awkward figure illustrations,

The illustrations have some really good qualities and some really bad qualities. As for the good, the landscapes, atmosphere and color are nicely done. The detail is at times excellent. As for the bad, the rendering of the figures is poor throughout, and the faces are worst of all. The gestures are unnatural and often lack the energy and tension expected of the scene. Gandalf, for example, on the bridge before the Balrog, merely holds his staff and looks nowhere in particular as the monster looms right over him. The hobbits always look...well excuse the term but, constipated, or half asleep, or just down right ugly. The features are severe, hard and homely. One lady, rather than beautiful and graceful looks like an effeminate man. The one exception is that Galadriel is very well done, and much better looking than the acress in the upcoming movie. Overall I'm disappointed.

Middle-earth never looked better,

Ted Nasmith has produced a beautiful calendar for 2002. All of the pictures are from The Fellowship of the Ring, and are done with a light, elegant touch. Nasmith's forte seems to be his deft hand with sweeping vistas of landscapes and clouds. He also does a lovely job with night scenes, with the one of Galadriel in this calendar being particularly beautiful. Nasmith is to produce calendars for the next two years, I understand, and I'm looking forward to them both!

I just bought this calender and I have to say one thing, its amazing. The artwork is beautiful, and if this is any indication of the movie this winter, it will be good.

Naismith is fantastic as usual, but not *as* fantastic...,

The years to buy the annual Tolkien theme calendar are, for we fans of Ted Naismith's incredible art, the years that he is asked to submit artwork for it. That said, these paintings are not quite the stuff of legend previous calendars by Naismith have been. They almost seem done in his older style, which I don't think I quite enjoy as much. Nevertheless, unlegendary Naismith is still probably better than a whole print catalogue of other Tolkien artists, so I'll be hanging mine prominently anyway. Plus, this will be the year for Tolkien-related merchandise. All in all, a better Tolkien calendar than is currently on my wall.
