Book Description

2002
This book, with illustrations, gathers some of J.R.R. Tolkien's least-known and hardest-to-find works in one volume. These include "Smith of Wootton Major (story of a magical gift concealed in the most amazing cake), "Farmer Giles of Ham" (a dragon terrorizing the English village of Ham and the townspeople only hope is a local farmer with an inflated reputation of chasing away giants), "Tree and Leaf" (a work consisting of Tolkien's groundbreaking essay "On Fairy-stores" - a most readable examination of the meaning of fantasy), "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" (sixten poems from the Red Book) and "Sir Gawain and teh Green Knight" (Tolkien's first career translation of medieval poetry).

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique collection. . ., January 18, 2005
This review is from: A Tolkien Miscellany (Paperback)
. . .of some of the best Tolkien material you may have NEVER seen!

JRR Tolkien, best known for "The Hobbit", "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Silmarillion" also wrote a great deal else! Many readers may be unfamiliar with this fact. Other readers may have seen portions of this book presented in other collections or settings. This one is unique in that it contains not only a collection of short fiction ("Farmer Giles of Ham", "Smith of Wooten Major" and "Leaf by Niggle") but also a collection of poetry ("The Adventures of Tom Bombadil") a non-fiction essay ("On Fairy Stories") and his very highly regarded modern academic translation of "Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight".

This book is a MUST for true lovers of Tolkien.

Five Stars.

This review is from: A Tolkien Miscellany (Paperback)
. . .of short stories, poems, and essays from one of the Big People who truly knew and loved us hobbits. Hobbits will especially love the collection of poetry known as "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" which derive from the great Red Book of Westmarch written and compiled by our own Bilbo and Frodo Baggins of great renown, and by our beloved Mayor, Samwise Gamgee.

This is an excellent book! I espcially loved the essay on fairy-stories. I checked it out from a library and now am looking for a copy to buy. I definately recommend this book to everyone, espcially lovers of fantasy.
