Somewhat difficult transition, but rewarding for Wars fans,

Tom Clancy's ENDWAR for the DS is a bumpy road that gets to really good places. I first played the ENDWAR demo on the XBOX360 and was quickly turned off by trying to scream voice commands to middle-person lady who didn't understand me half the time. Then I saw one of my young cousins playing the handheld version on the PSP at Christmas, and being a HUGE Advance Wars fan and liking the what I was seeing on the PSP, got my own copy. I went for the DS version because I prefer the system in general and knew having the animations of battle on the above screen would keep things moving more smoothly (which it does).
To humbly clear a few things up regarding M.Anderson's 'Tedious' review, the tedious waiting for the computer, or 'Satelite Sequences' actually stop a few missions into the first easier European campaign. After that, the gameplay speeds up with some button pressing for quicker advancement through battle animations. 2-player can actually be played on seperate DS, but not wi-fi, just two people with same game in same room for wireless play. Also, if you lose a battle, the game will give you the option to add reinforcements, so you can start the battle over with some extra unit support. The graphics arn't too bad. The fighting sequences are very similar to Advance Wars, but on the regular maps, landmarks look good, movement is nicely animated, and the the rotars on the helicopters even spin, so the regular map screens arn't static. The best part of this game is the AI. Playing against the cpu is tough, but it has realistic strengths and weaknesses that makes each level unique and interesting. ENDWAR handheld is like a focused, faster version of Advance Wars. It's not AS fun or satisfying, but once you get the hang of gameplay differences, ENDWAR is fun and satisfying on a different level. You'll find you want to repeat battles 3 or 4 times (more as the difficulty increases) to get all the medals and the top scores (gotta go for the Platinum and every medal). Once you get over that this isn't Advance Wars, embrace what parts of it are like advance wars, than embrace what isn't, ENDWAR is a solid war strategy experience. I definately recommend it.

ever since i got my hands on strategy game was a long time ago, and i just loved these types of games. true, some times there are hard parts in this game. but, after a wile you learn that a full force wave to their lines will not work
i would give a four star, but it has a editor that you can make your own battle ground and fight the Russians, EU, or the USA. or be any of them. okay, it is hard, but it is fun and is very griping

The game is fun, until you get stuck. I am trying to capture the harbor at Calais.
There are no tutorials for the Nintendo DS. There needs to be better directions as to how objectives can be attained. I cannot go any further unless I find help. I am frustrated that I am unable to continue. If you are willing to play the same scenario many MANY times, this game will satisfy you. If you have played, please help those of us who are stuck.

Don't be fooled,
By PROS -Create a map feature is great to play with 2nd person in VS mode. CONS -The action is slow and tedious and the computer takes too long to move or attack and you cant skip. -You can't produce more units in your base but can only repair(some missions can't repair) -In mission mode you always start with less units and have to think of way to win. -This is a single player game( no wi-fi) but it has a 2 player VS feature when you make a move give DS to other person. - Not enough units or difference between each country. -The fighting sequence is a rip off from advance wars games -No voice command Overall : If you really want a turn based strategy game get advance wars or civilization.

This game is not the same as the console version, because DS does not have enough graphic power. The action is turn based instead of real time like consoles. There are three factions with campaign you can pick(russians, europe,USA) Russian campaign can only be unlocked when you complete US or europe campaign. There are two steps to attack your enemy 1. YOU Move (enemy selects which unit to attack) 2. YOU Select which unit to attack(enemy moves).
PROS -When you kill enough units or destroy all targets with so many turns new maps and medal unlocked in free mode. -Create a map feature is great to play with 2nd person in VS mode. -The fighting sequence is a rip off from advance wars games -No voice command Overall : If you really want a turn based strategy game get advance wars or civilization , or just get a Endwar for console its $50 at Best Buy with wireless mic. |
