Editorial Review

Rainbow Six is a surprisingly faithful conversion of the popular covert-ops simulator for the PC, PlayStation, and Dreamcast--and that might be its biggest fault. The little Game Boy Color handheld just isn't suited for the detailed planning phase each mission requires, and it doesn't have the horsepower to make the game's enemies challenging at all.

All of the missions from the other games are re-created here, as are the screens where you select and outfit your team members. It can take quite some time to meticulously plan the routes you want team members to take during the actual mission, which makes it all the more frustrating once they get stuck before reaching the end of the route. This happens far too often, and most of the time we just ran through the levels with a character we were controlling directly and capped all the terrorists manually.

This is made easier than it should be by the fact that enemies are always visible, regardless of the number of walls between them and your team members. Ambushes are ridiculously easy to set up because of this, and the game loses much of tension found in other versions as a result. This isn't a completely terrible conversion of Rainbow Six, but similar games like Metal Gear Solid are much less tedious and a lot more fun. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • A solid story line taken directly from the original version of the game
  • Lots of missions, characters, and action
Cons:
  • The ability to see enemies at all times removes much of the tension that makes the original version so great

Product Description

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six comes to the Game Boy Color! Based on a story developed by Clancy, this game's compelling mix of action and story has already been praised by critics and consumers. In the game, players lead an elite multinational task force that aims to fight international terrorism. Gameplay is organized around a series of missions in which you plan and execute precise assaults on terrorist installations. As your mission advances, you will uncover a larger and more sinister conspiracy, where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. And unlike other games, if you make a mistake, you're gone-- because in the real world, one shot counts.

To carry out a mission, the player must lead a crack team of skilled specialists through a planned operation using an overhead model of the target area. Once satisfied with their strategy, the player then takes charge of the assault. Rainbow Six creates the best of both strategy- and team-oriented action gameplay. With 14 different missions in real world locations, the variety of gameplay is extensive. So carefully select your team and even more carefully, conceive your plan. Remember, one shot kills and if you die, the game isn't over... the world is.

I bought Rainbow Six with great confidence in my purchace and I got pretty much what I expected. Rainbow Six is a good game with some good features and some minor flaws. Like sometimes the rest of your squad will get stuck on a corner and you will be walking alone. Also Some levels have Maybe 4 guys on a big level. But there are also good things about it. Like sometimes it will automatically go in to first-person shooter mode, and the setup for each level is cool. You get to choose weopons, choose outfits, guys, and plan your mission path ahead of time.I think it's worth the money. Overall Rainbow Six is a good game.

Red Storm may have thought they were doing the world a favor when they released this game for the Game Boy, but is sadly quite the opposite. The gameplay is tedious and slow. The box is deceitful in appearance, in which it seems to portray a game that is fun. I only wish I'd read some of these reviews before I bought it.

If you are looking for the same fun gameplay as in the PC and N64 version of this game then you are in for a big surprise, this game is a stinker. The pre-game graphics look cool but there really is no point to any of it because all of the characters and selectable weapons are the same. There isn't much difference between characters and weapons. Gameplay is lousy. It's very slow and boring; you spend most of your time walking around looking for your objective with no action occurring. Just don't spend your money on this game if you are looking for a game with a challenge and good looking graphics.
