Product Description

In Rogue Spear, the sequel to the popular Rainbow Six series of games from the PC and other platforms, players assume command of an elite counterterrorist group and guide them through a dynamic campaign filled with more than 20 nerve-wracking missions, such as rescuing hostages from a museum and infiltrating a hijacked airliner. The game incorporates as many strategy elements as first-person shooter targets, with mission planning being central to the gameplay. Fully voiced mission briefings and animated maps will highlight your objectives, and you'll delegate routes and duties to each member of your team. Unlike many shooter games of the past and present, you and your team can't rely on power-ups and first-aid packs to cover your thoughtless firing; if you get shot, your game is over.

Product Description

The sequel to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear throws players back into the fight against terrorism. This Dreamcast version also includes the PC version's expansion pack, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear -- Urban Operations. Single Player mode is made up of more than 20 missions divided into two phases: planning and action. During the planning phase you will receive the mission briefing; review all intelligence sources; study the roster and choose the eight best men for the mission; arm the operatives with weapons and other useful equipment; break the group into smaller fire teams; and plan where each operative will go, what they will do, and how they should do it. The action phase plays out like a first-person shooter. Players take control of one of the team leaders and can switch between leaders at any time. A watch option is also available allowing users to watch their plan unfold without taking part in it. When controlling an operative, either a first-person or third-person view can be used. Operatives can sneak, crouch, climb ladders, peek around corners, and perform a number of firing tactics. A mission comes to an end when either you choose to abort, your entire team is killed, or the objectives are completed. While the planning phase can take more than a hour, the action phase may be completed in as quick as a few minutes. Some other gameplay options allow missions to be practiced, played as Lone Wolf, and played as Terrorist Hunt. Lone Wolf is a mode where players play on the same map as the mission but without the same objectives. With only one operative, the objective to go from the insertion zone to the extraction zone without being killed. Terrorist Hunt requires you and your team to eliminate all of the terrorists on the map without having to worry about hostages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, January 15, 2001
By

This review is from: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear (Video Game)
As much as the game will try to convince you otherwise, this game basically pits you in the role of the leader of a swat team rescuing hostages. Most of the campaigns revolve around this plot. What makes the game absolutely Amazing is the beautiful sceneries and complex rendering of battlegrounds. One mission pits you in the bombed out ruins of a Serbian town where you're goal is to rescue NATO officials from a renegade Serbian army force. Another mission has you sneaking down the tight corridors of a jumbo jet liner taking out a team of armed hijackers while the plane is refueling. The game (along with Rainbow 6) is the James Bond 007 of the Dreamcast system and is definitely worth a try.

My complaints are few. I think many of the new games take advantage of all the controls available on the Dreamcast controller. While making for more complex games, it also makes for steep learning curves to really be able to play (and enjoy) the game. I spent maybe 2 or 3 hours just trying to learn how to effectively control my individual group leader and much longer learning how to control my "team". The difficulty also increases pretty dramatically between missions. Also, unless you have an RF-adapter, the VGA plug in, or a large screen TV, the small text will be hard to read on your screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Medal of Honor!, December 19, 2000

Well, I consider myself almost an expert on most games, especially 1st person shooters. I previously reviewed Medal of Honor Underground for the PS, I meant to give it a 5 but accidentily put a 3. I used to be a loyal Sony guy, but after the mess with the PS2, I've changed sides. This game is possibly the best FPS I've ever played on a console, I say that because Half-Life Counter-Strike for the computer is 10 times better. This game sports excellent graphics, realistic sound and a fun factor that is not measurable! I haven't beaten it yet, but when I do I'm sure I'll start from scratch and have more fun the second time. Not many FPSs have a lot of replay value, but this one does! The control is a little complicated as was the case with Rainbow Six for the Dreamcast, but any true gamer will have the controls down just fine in an hour tops. My advice: BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea and Game play, July 7, 2001
By
Chris (Lafayette, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear (Video Game)
This is a great 1st person shooter. Although this game has a great plot, game play, great controls (hard to learn) and a good overall playability, it does have its weaknesses. The multiplayer is not nearly as good as in the PC version. But, the James Bond style deathmach that it does have is still fun. The Graphics are James Bondish too (like N64) but this does not hinder the overall playability. If you are looking for a 1st person shooter that takes thinking, then this is your game. The controlls are complicated but they are easy enough to get used to. I gave it a 4 because of the graphics and multiplayer but if those don't matter to you then i am sure you will give it a 5.
