I'm not sure what the other reviewer's issue is with this game, but I LLLOOOOOVVVEEEE IT!!! This review is about the game, not a comparison with the old PC versions. I have not played any older Splinter Cell versions so I don't have anything to compare it to. In opposition to what he said, my frame rate was awesome, I could have 10 guys shooting at me and my system wasn't bogged down (either he is a 360 fan or he needs a new game or system). My game never was crawling or bogged down. AND, much of the game is dark, but I would imagine that in real life that's when spies spy, at night. HA! DUH. The only time this game got on my nerves, was sometimes I'd stand behind a combatant and try to grab him but couldnt get the grab prompt to come up because i was standing wrong eventhough I was right behind him. The only thing I would agree with him on, is that the graphics were nothing outstanding. However, I have not played a PS3 game that made me want to purchase it because it looks good. I purchase for play quality, and leave the rest to blu ray discs.

I rented this game from Blockbuster and kept it a few days longer because I didn't want to take it back. Now I have ordered it from Amazon. This is one of those games where you use your brain more than just running around shooting up everything that moves (for that I hear you should buy RESISTANCE). In Splinter Cell-Double Agent, you'll pick locks, use spy cams, steal terrorist information, etc., You start off as a NSA Agent but then while the story goes along, you can choose rather to keep spying for the NSA or betray them for another agency (can't remember the name of it). I thought this added alot to gameplay because it reminded me of those CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE series books from when I was a teenager. You don't just have one way you have to go during the game. You can choose to do some missions (for NSA), some for the other agency, or both (if time allows). This way, it appears that you can play the game through one way, and then go back and choose to totally take a different route and get another outcome the second time. (I'm not sure if that's totally true though as I have not passed the game).

I am playing the game on EASY, i know, like a chicken, and I'm still dying and getting caught spying sometimes. I do this because I don't have time to restart missions from checkpoints a million times. I'd rather just make it simple and pass. I don't have time to play video games like I used to. I thought the controller was set up well and very simple to use. I regularly play Socom and God of War, so I easily adapted to this controller set up. There is also a fun tutorial for those that have never played this type of game and can't figure out what to do or how to use equipment.

Overall, I think this game is awesome. I can see myself passing it, and playing it again (which I never do) just to see if I can get another outcome at the end. I can't wait till it comes in the mail since I have since returned my rented one. Read more ›

I really enjoyed the amazing graphics and very diverse landscapes in this game. I haven't played any previous Splinter Cell games before so I can't compare this one to those. What I can say is the graphics and the story are excellent, and it compares brilliantly with other PS3 games I have played.

The "breaking out of jail" portion in the early stages of the game is really amazing fun, and it just keeps getting better from there. I had no trouble whatsoever with framerates or loading speeds (my PS3 has yet to show any signs of strain or error or anything close to a glitch after one year of blissful use).

I am trying to be objective and think of some flaw in this game but I really can't, hence the 5 star perfect rating. I look forward to trying another Tom Clancy game after this one.

The play control is very similar to the previous games in the series. The biggest improvement in my opinion is in the depth of the plot. In this installment Fisher infiltrates a domestic terrorist organization. He has to gain the trust of the terrorists but if he's too loyal he will lose the trust of the NSA. This plot twist means that as a player you have to think before you make decisions because there will be consequences based on your decisions, both good and bad.
I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who's into espionage style adventure games.

First off, the good.
The graphics are much improved, pretty much what you would expect from the PS3.

Many new added game play features, most notably the double agent feature where you actually carry out objectives that affect your future missions.

For example, after you plant a bomb on the ship, you can either:
1. Let the bomb go off and not risk blowing your cover,

2. Stop the bomb and have a solid standing with the NSA
But risk blowing your cover.

Or

3. Frame someone else for stopping the bomb and remain in good standing with both organizations.

Of course, the person who gets framed will no longer be there to help you. It's this kind of game play that truly breaks new ground and doesn't make this feel like an expansion to the Ps2/Xbox versions.

Also, new gadgets and features don't hurt this game at all. Interrogation, Fingerprint scanners, Laser microphones which are used to get past voice activated locks. If you liked previous versions of SC, chances are, you're going to love this one. The extra features are icing on the cake.

Now for the bad.

Although the graphics are great, there are plenty of times where the frame rate suffers slightly. It won't get to the point where it's totally unplayable, but even in a building where there aren't any huge explosions going on, it can get a little (just a little) jerky.

Secondly, This game is a lot more difficult than the first installment of SC. I have replayed SC many times over but in this version, you really -really- cannot afford to get spotted.
In some missions, getting spotted immediately ends the mission, you character freezes and there is no opportunity to escape. The "Alert" system is nothing like Metal Gear Solid's. When you get spotted, you don't have a time frame to knock out the guard before he calls for backup. Reinforcements will close in on you immediately, not to mention, you die in about 5-6 shots, which really tests your sneaking skills.

Lastly,
The beginning missions don't fully familiarize you with everything that Sam Fisher is capable of. These missions will tell you that you can interrogate someone for information, but they won't tell you more important things like being able to knockout/kill someone much faster by pressing L2 or R2 rather than sneaking right behind then, grabbing them, and taking precious seconds to drag them into a corner.

Of course, this can be fixed by simply opening the manual and taking mental notes of what the controls do. Just make sure you know the controls before embarking on more difficult missions.

All and all,
Great game play, improved graphics, new features, Innovative system.

If you're looking for a challenge, the new bar set with this version would give the most seasoned Splinter Cell Veterans something to work on (Even on normal difficulty).

I originally wrote a review several years ago when I purchased this game for the Xbox 360. I had forgotten about the review and stumbled upon it again and decided to update and upgrade my review since I am now playing it on the Playstation 3.

First, after my Xbox broke for the 8th time or so, I begrudgenly decided to purchase a PS3 and to buy this game, again. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the online gameplay is LEAGUES better on the PS3 versus the Xbox. Graphics are essentially the same. This review is geared solely toward the MULTIPLAYER game mode, since that is clearly the area where this game excels. Here are the pros and cons of the game broken down for you:

CONS:

1) Sometimes (not often) the game will freeze your PS3 (however, it frequently froze the Xbox);
2) there are not as many parameters for the host to change, as was the case with Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory, such as time of the game, available weapons, etc.); and
3) there haven't been any releases of new maps since, approximately, the game was released.

PROS:

1) Absolute heart-pounding action;
2) addictive gameplay that is not (so far) replicated by any other game;
3) six-players can enter a game (it used to be only four with prior installments); and
4) there are not as many parameters for the host to change (yes...this was listed as a "con," but I also feel its a "pro" since this levels out the playing field).

For those of you that are not familiar with this franchise, here is an explanation of the multiplayer gameplay:

SPY GOAL:

To download two files from any combination of four terminals located on each map and then return the files to your base. Each game is 20 minutes.

MERCENARY GOAL:

To prevent the spies from downloading and returning the two files to their base.

BASIC INFORMATION (SPIES):

There are up to three spies that can play. Each spy has four lives. As you progress in experience points, you can unlock different suits for the spy. The most advanced male suit covers you entirely in black, thereby providing you with more cover in the shadows. The spies are acrobatic by nature and rely on stealth and hiding the shadows. The player controls the spy in 3rd person view. Spies can climb into ventilation systems, jump into ceilings. There are lights in every map that can be "hacked" (i.e., turned off) by the spies, providing additional coverage. A file can be downloaded by a spy when the spy is in close proximity to a terminal and, the closer the spy is to the terminal, the faster the download of the file. Spies can equip one of four available gadgets, which can be swapped out and refilled at any time in a weapons chest located in the spy base.

The gadgets are these:
1) Smoke Grenades: you have three smoke grenades that you can throw down. These cause the mercenaries to slow down and have difficulty moving, but they do not provide much cover.
2) Flash Grenade: Probably the most effective gadget, you have three of them to throw down and blind the mercenaries for several seconds, allowing you to escape or attempt a kill or disabling maneuver (explained more later).
3) Syringes: you have three of them to heal yourself or other spies in the event of injury.
4) Jammers: you have three of these to throw down...these little devices are, essentially, spy decoys since they sound like a spy and show up on the mercenaries' HUD as if a spy was there.

You can kill a mercenary in one of three ways:
1) go behind them and snap their neck;
2) jump on them twice or
3) pull them over a railing.

Spies also have two special types of vision modes to help them with their tough objectives:
1) night vision mode, to help them see in the dark and
2) heat vision mode, to help them see the mercenaries by sensing body heat.

BASIC INFORMATION (MERCENARIES):

Mercenaries have four lives and up to three mercenaries can play. Unlike the spies, mercenaries are played from a first-person point of view, which restricts your field of vision (a good thing for the spies!). Mercenaries are about raw firepower, being equipped with only three weapons: unlimited ammunition in a automatic machine gun (with scoping capabilities), three grenades that can be refilled at any time in the mercenaries' weapons chest located at the mercenary base and two "drones" that can also be re-supplied at the weapons chest. Drones are attached to the mercenaries' backs. Since mercenaries are NOT acrobatic and cannot jump into ceilings, vents, etc., a drone is critical for the mercenary. Once a drone is activated, the mercenary sees things through the drone, which can be controlled by the mercenary to enter vents, ceilings, etc. At the push of a button by the mercenary and three seconds later, the drone can self-destruct, killing anything within its range...spies AND other mercenaries, so be careful! Also, when a mercenary is "droning," one danger is that a spy can simply come up behind the mercenary and snap a neck, so one needs to be careful about that, too.

One of the biggest assets the mercenaries have is a flashlight attached to the head of the mercenary suit. The flashlight is critical for seeing a spy in the dark. Additionally, the mercenaries have an automatic motion sensor function that creates a white line around a spy that is running and also an "EMF" mode which allows the mercenaries to see a spy that is using a "hacking device." There is also a "pulse" that goes off if a spy is nearby, where the pulse gets louder and quicker the closer the mercenary gets to a spy, aiding the mercenary in finding the little devils. If there are not three players as mercenaries for a given game, "bots" can be selected to fill these spots so computer characters can fill this void...necessary, really, for these maps to have three mercenaries at any given time, particularly if you have an experienced spy. Like the spies, as you increase experience points, you unlock other mercenary suits. The top-level suit covers a mercenary in all black, making a mercenary harder to spot in dark places.

FINAL COMMENTS: I can tell you that there NO OTHER GAME mode causes me to have my hands shake from the heart-pounding action as the spy vs. merc multiplayer (Chaos Theory and Double Agent). When you are a spy, and you are trying to "hack" a terminal, and you see a glimpse of a mercenary's flash light, which means that the mercenary is on his way, the adrenaline rush is unbelievable! This game provides for unlimited hours of thrilling gameplay, as the re-playability of the online multiplayer is excellent. To this day, this is my favorite online game. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in online gaming, and, if you have both a PS3 and an Xbox and you are interested in only purchasing this game for one system, hands down purchase the PS3 version.
