Format: Hardcover
Though I've never been a big Tom Cruise fan, it intrigued me when I came across a copy of Amy Nicholson's TOM CRUISE: ANATOMY OF AN ACTOR. Previous CAHIERS DU CINEMA volumes featured such acting heavyweights as Pacino, Brando, de Niro and Streep. I wondered how Cruise rated being included in such company. After finishing Nicholson's intriguing book, I'm still not sure Cruise rates that distinction but it was a fascinating read nonetheless.

Nicholson's book is equal parts film history and psychoanalysis of Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. Among the Cruise films examined are RISKY BUSINESS, TOP GUN, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, JERRY MAGUIRE, EYES WIDE SHUT, MAGNOLIA, WAR OF THE WORLDS, TROPIC THUNDER and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL. Interwoven with that material is Nicholson's penetrating, insightful exploration of Cruise's development as a person.

I was somewhat surprised at some of the flicks included and excluded but it's Nicholson book and she obviously chose carefully to make her point.

Movie buffs will enjoy this in-depth summary of the life, times and craft of Tom Cruise. Recommended.

Wow! Who knew a book about Tom Cruise could be so interesting, intelligent, and insightful! I definitely have a greater appreciation for Mr. Cruise than I did before reading Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor. Ms. Nicholson has a great sense of humor, and an exceptional skill for observation and analysis. Bravo! (I hope she writes more of these Cahiers du Cinema books!

A must read for both Cruise's fans and detractors. Anyone who doesn't like Cruise will come away from the book at least admiring him. You can say you don't think he's a good actor, but you can never say he doesn't work hard. The book does a nice job of balancing his personal life with his work life, and it thankfully leans more on the latter. It's a great gift for film buffs. Plenty of awesome behind-the-scenes stories.

The only better way to really get to know the history of Tom Cruise's career would be to sit down with him and have him tell you the stories, even then he would probably just recite this book word for word. Nicholson does an outstanding job catologing Cruise's life's work and gives plenty "behind the films" moments that will keep you reading this book from cover to cover. The entire time I was reading her book I kept thinking to myself "wow that's amazing", "that's incredible I never knew that". So if you think you knew it all about Cruise put yourself to the test, I'm sure you will be amazed.
