Giant, sturdy BBQ tools!,
By New Bride "trsgirl" (Cleveland, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tom Douglas by Pinzon 3-Piece Stainless-Steel Barbecue Tool Set with Wooden Handles (Kitchen)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
These tools are the perfect size, well made and sturdy.
Handles just long enough to get the job done without burning yourself. I don't think I would put them in the dishwasher though, unless I had left them out and forgotten about 'em and they were really filthy. The fork could be a tiny bit smaller, but overall this is a great set! UPDATE: After using them for a couple months, the turnover broke right through the handle, just 'cause it got stuck in the grid. It didn't take any force at all to split the wood. And NO I didn't wash them in the dishwasher.

Nice Except For The Spatula...,

There is not much to say about what you can do with these tools. It is obvious what they are for.
The basting brush works great. The fork as well. I use a very hot grill and the brazing brush holds up nicely. The fork is strong and does not bend easily like so many others I have used. The wood handles are appealing, but I honestly don't care that much about the look of the handles. If you are looking for decoration, they are nice. The problem with the set is the spatula. It is too small for the job, especially if you are doing anything bigger than a burger. It is hopeless for fish and larger items you would use it for. I have a very large spatula I use and it is awesome. This one, therefore, is relegated to the utensil bin. I like the look of the set, I like the build and quality, but the spatula is worthless.

I was so impressed with these utencils that I plan on buying a set for a Father's Day gift.
They are made strong and sturdy not like some of these flimsy other versions. And the beautiful yet practical wooden handles are the perfect finishing touch. I know that we're only talking about bar-b-queing, but with these pieces you feel as though you're preparing something extra special on the grill and not just basic hamburgers. If you're going to be doing the cooking anyway, why not own something that is not only a quality made product of exceptional standard but also something to make your neighbors a liitle jealous?

This product features three handsome pieces of brushed stainless steel utensils with sealed oak handles. The burger flipper (spatula) is very useful-- although it could be just maybe a bit longer. The fork is made for flipping a side of brontosaurus --It's huge- just too big. It is too large to be useful for most backyard cookouts with kids (hot dogs). The brush is my favorite piece. I've used silicone style brushes before and fell in love with them the first time because of their durability and utility in spreading marinade or basting meat. However, this brush has an angled head, which requires a bit of getting use to to position it correctly. Like other reviewers I hesitate to run these through the dishwasher because of the wood. If anyone has done so with success, please let me know as it would be good to run them through from time to time.

A big test of how good bbq equipment is, is how well it holds up. Unfortunately its a little early to tell for this set. This is a nice looking, basic bbq set thats worked pretty well for me for the few times I've used it. You get just what the picture indicates, and no storage box of any type. My only complaint is that I like my spatula's to have slits in it which this one doesnt. Thats a personal preference, and really speaks more to my love of all things undercooked than it does to a design flaw. I would also have liked the spatula to be a bit larger, but these are rather minor things. The fork and basting brush work exactly like they should. (Although I'm not a huge fan of silicone basting brushes, they are just weird to me, but this one works very well and is a sooo easy to clean.) Like everything in the Pinzon line, these are great for someone who wantes to get started with pretty good stuff on the cheap.

Perfect Well-balanced Combo,

I had a modicum of reluctance about these tools until I used them several times. The heft is insignificant when compared to how well-balanced each tool is.
The first impression of the flipper was "gee, that is too small for a head" however, I soon found that nothing I used on the grill would be much bigger than this head. Consequently, the flipper worked especially well. It does not work well by itself for a large piece of fish that should be turned with a larger spatula but for burgers or filets and strips it is perfect. Since it is stainless steel a simple wipe-off is all that is necessary while cooking. When I saw the brush I said that it would not add much to the cooking adventure but, again, my impressions were invalid. The brush is not the typical bristle or sisal as we find all too often. The brush is steel and it works as well as I could expect a brush to do. The bend in the brush makes the job easier from the standpoint of where I stand and the angle of the brush on. Normally, I prefer not to use a fork to turn meat. The tines inserted in the meat cause the meat to get tough and I avoid using one unless it is used together with the spatula for turning larger pieces. The fork is good for stirring in a bar-b-que pot or picking up veggies. All told this is a great set and it has a great chance to get worn out in one or two seasons.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
These barbecue tools are not only gorgeous but also well designed and practical. Made from a lovely hardwood and brushed aluminum these tools are very light making them easy to use and control. Each item is just the right size and length and the set seems very sturdy. The tools say they are dishwasher safe but I haven't put them the dishwasher since I don't want to take the chance of ruining the gorgeous color of the wood handles which some dishwasher detergents often do. I am thrilled that the basting brush is silicon. It means that the bristles won't melt or stain and are easy to clean. Best of all silicon bristles assure that there are no stray bristles stuck to the food. These are a bargain price when compared to other BBQ tools found in stores and they are well worth every penny. Living in Texas I grill year round and my tools get lots of use. I highly recommend these to both the occasional outdoor chef and the grill expert. You will love them!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a nice and well made BBQ tool set, but not great for the $30 price tag.
The heavy gauge stainless steel part could have been made better, the spatula is too stiff, I would like it a little flexible. I also have some doubts that it will remain stainless for long, especially if it stored outdoor with the grill. It also does not seem to be inserted deep into the wooden handle. The wooden handles are also, in my judgment, prone to deterioration and eventually cracking with the use of dishwasher (I'm not sure if the wood has been treated other than the shinny coating); however, time will tell. As other reviewer noted, I wish the handles were a bit longer, even with my mid size grill, my hands are too close to the heat to be confortable, I had to wear a mitten. On the positive side, the set is well balanced, and looks good. Overall, 3.5 stars.

This is a sturdy and attractive set of grilling tools. It's nice that they are dishwasher safe, though I'd be surprised if the wood kept in great shape with many washings. The only thing is I just wish the handle was an inch longer. The last inch of each has a hole for hooking onto a grill.
I'd give them a 3.5 if I could, but I had to round up. If I had a smaller grill, then my hands would remain away from the heat and I'd give them 5 stars.

I ordered this BBQ set and it is everything it promised it would be and more. Am I surprised when this happens? Not when it's a Tom Douglas item. I don't even need to know anything other than it's by Tom Douglas and I know it will be my favorite. I have his items all around my kitchen and I love each one of them. I wish everything I had was by him.
This BBQ set is beautiful. The wooden handles are comfortable, the perfect length. The stainless is gorgeous, the perfect size and shape to flip, turn, stab and baste. My daughter has a more expensive set yet is envious of these! If Mr. Douglas stays true to what I have seen with the items I have of his, then all I will need to know is that the merchandise has his name on it. Tom Douglas, to me, is synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, genious! |
