Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Award-winning chef-restaurateur Tom Douglas, Dexter-Russell, and Amazon.com introduce a line of multi-functional products that will inspire home chefs and build confidence in the kitchen. This 6-1/2-inch fish turner, manufactured by Dexter-Russell, combines a professional design and high-grade materials, making it ideal for everyday use. The stainless-steel slotted turner is super flexible to get under the most delicate fish and even large crab cakes. Signature slots allow excess liquids to drain back into the pan as you lift. An attractive walnut handle is secured to the tang with two brass compression rivets. Dexter-Russell has been manufacturing tools and cutlery since 1818, creating products that are designed, built, and tested to be people-friendly and kitchen-tough. This spatula is made in the USA and carries a limited lifetime warranty. To maintain the beauty of the tool, hand washing is recommended.

Tom's Tips

  • This spatula is flexible but still sturdy--it's perfect for flipping the most delicate fish fillets.
  • Although the turner is designed for fish, it's actually very handy for any sauté-pan flipping duty.

This is a special run of the standard Dexter-Russell 6 1/2" slotted turner and is sold exclusively (I think) by amazon. Outside of the Tom Douglas logo on the blade it appears identical and, if you're buying through amazon, sells for a few dollars less; it's also about a third more than similar products made in China.

Functionally it does it's job, is reasonably flexible, but does need the blade front honed slightly, which can be done over time with use or immediately with a sharpening stone. The handle, at least on my example, may be walnut, but not of the same quality as you might expect. However, it is firmly attached with two brass rivets and provides a secure grip. Additionally it's not likely to suffer disfigurement if left resting on a skillet rim. Overall the combination of flexibility and strength appears about right and the turner does it's job of gently turning fragile foods well. It's also the sort of kitchen tool you tend to keep in your hand so it serves double duty when turning fond into a pan sauce or lifting heavier items (small filet or chop) from a crowded pan without carrying excessive oil when plating. It doesn't have a particularly "gourmet" look, but it is functional and of reasonably high quality.

To me the virtue of functionality and US manufacturing make it a solid choice if you're looking for a multi-purpose slotted turner.

I have never ever, not even once in my life, been able to flip an egg... until now! This is the greatest flipping tool I have ever used. It's comfortable to use, very sturdy, and looks great. Great purchase.

Very high quality product. A little pricey, but the quality is there...you get what you pay for, right? I was unable to find this item in stores...all they offered were plastic, or lightweight wire handled. I wanted one that would perform and last, and this is definitely it! I recommend this product and seller highly!

My wife saw one of these on a TV cooking show and had to have it. Seems of good quality, nice wood handle, flexible SS blade. She loves it -- what more can I say?

Nice turner - perfect size for use with Lodge cast iron pans and with just the right amount of flex. I like to cook in cast iron and most other turners are too large. This little turner is just the right size and cleans up beautifully. I probably use this 3 to four times a week and it still looks new. I recommend hand washing rather than dish washer. It fits nicely in the hand and I'm thinking of getting a second one.
UPDATE 11/2013 - still using this slotted turner several times a week and it's still fantastic - still looks almost new!!
