I have to say this was a rather disappointing release of his work. If you are a fan and already purchase The Complete Kake Comics (which most of his fans have) then you already have over half of the book. It's kind of frustrating how his estate is going about releasing his more obscure work in bits and pieces with large chunks of previously published works we already have. Here is a list of the contents -

Introduction (pretty much the same one as in The Complete Kake Comics)
A very early strip (short and previously unpublished)
Kake (numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, and 10)
Beach Boys (numbers 1 & 2)
Jack (the jungle series, numbers 1, 2, 3)

This volume reprints twelve of Tom of Finland's comic-book stories (as opposed to pin-ups, etc.), including one previously unpublished colour comic, along with an Introduction by the editor giving Tom's biographical details.

The Contents are -
P006: Introduction
P020: Unpublished (colour comic from 1946)
P038: Kake #1 -The Intruder (1968)
P058: Kake #3 - C*ck-Hungry Cops (1968)
P078: Kake #5 - Punishment (1970)
P100: Kake #7 - Tea Room Odyssey [though `cottaging' would be the appropriate British title] (1970)
P122: Kake #8 - Hi-Jacked (1971)
P142: Kake #10 - Raunchy Truckers (1971)
P162: Beach Boys #1 (1971)
P184: Beach Boys #2 (1971)
P206: Jack of the Jungle #1 - The White Hunter (1971)
P226: Jack of the Jungle #2 - R*pe of the Jungle Giant (1972)
P248: Jack of the Jungle #3 - Jungle Seafood (1972)

Note that I have added a few asterisks to spare Amazon's blushes... Note also that the Introduction is only four pages in English as there are German and French-language versions also. Each story is 20 pages, plus cover, except the unpublished one, which is only 16 pages. For those of you unfamiliar with Tom's comics, each page is a single panel, reproduced here at half-size - at least my copies of the individual Jack of the Jungle comics are printed as A4; other editions may have differed. As to the content of the stories, the titles listed above tell you exactly what to expect - they depict various numbers of men happily and graphically engaging in what nowadays would be called unsafe sex, so enter at your peril.

This is a nice little collection of Tom's "Kake " series of comic strips.Tom of Finland's work does several things:He showed that gay men can be masculine in their own way,but twists expectations about what it means to be masculine also, and shows tenderness even in rather rough sexual encounters(kissing is usually a part of every scene). That said there are some very questionable aspects to Tom's work such as the Black men in his strips look almost identical to each other(that seems racist to me) and some might find the uniformed police officers threatening not sexy. However,it's important to remember these are Tom's fantasies so they tell the reader something about him and the fact that they are not heavily filtered gives them a certain honesty that is lacking in some other gay erotic art.

I remember getting horned up looking at the VERY explicit comics of Tom of Finland back in the '80s. I loved those over sized magazine type comics. They were more fun than Playgirl ever could be. The hot and very overly endowed men that graced the pages of Tom of Finland were my dream/fantasy men. The comics were very explicit in nature where as the ones in this book are not as hardcore. It is still a good book, but would have liked to have seen his "harder" drawings. These seem soft porn over the hard porn I was used to. But this is one heavy duty hard back book filled with his drawings. Just wanted more squirtin and gushin out of these studs. Guess I will keep lookin...

Do not even think twice, hit the BUY button and get it on it's way to your box...... Any man who is a fan of Tom of Finland must buy this book. The price is a pittance for the quality of this book. Buy it used, buy it new, but buy it, even if you already own "The Art of Pleasure" and XXL. Make sue to also check out the other companion edition of this book of comics. Simply more TOF at his very best. Buy more than one copy, I guarantee you your friends will wear yours out.

I was surprised that the book itself was smaller than I expected. I thought that iit would have been larger. I have ordered another edition that will be more comprehensive in stories.

I just bought a copy at a small bookstore in Northampton to use for my master's thesis on Jean Genet and the image of the homoerotic sailor. Okay, not many sailors to be had in this edition of Tom of Finland's lovely comics, but what a delight to discover an *even more direct* side of Tom! I sympathize with the previous reviewer who clearly has already completed his collection of ToF, but as an amateur I was pleased by this beautiful edition (with a hilarious reversible cover). Tom's unflappable sex-positivity creates a (gorgeously-drawn) universe where pretty much everybody gets what they want. Even if you aren't queer or male, you just can't help but smile at all the fun these guys are having!

The drawings are clear-some are funny. I particularly liked the cover that could be changed to make the book look scholarly. The problem is that the only rendering with words is in a foreign language-one I am unfamiliar with.

I bought this book for myself years ago. It's difficult to find the first volume here in San Francisco, but I absolutely had to get a hold of another one for my dear friend. He loves it too!
