Book Description

0931271592 978-0931271595 September 15, 2001
Did Tom Horn kill Willie Nickell? He was a death sentence to rustlers and the devil incarnate to homesteaders in late nineteenth-century Wyoming.

Did Tom Horn commit the 1901 murder of the fourteen-year-old son of a sheep-owning homesteader who had stolen from the cattle barons ranges? If not, who did?

Cheyenne author Chip Carlson, in this, his third book, answers these questions and others with the monumental results of more than ten years of research into primary sources.

Who were Tom Horn s other victims? Was there collusion on the part of three governors in two Colorado murders? How could the jury return a verdict of guilty in Tom Horn s trial in the face of evidence that someone else was the killer? Why did Tom Horn s parents flee to Canada? Was there jury tampering and bribery? Why did Tom Horn say I would kill him and be done with him? What was the role of schoolteacher Glendolene Kimmell, and where did she end her years?

Tom Horn, the most notorious of Wyoming s range detectives and a pre-eminent name in Wyoming history, operated unchecked until he was arrested for the murder of Willie Nickell. The murder and questionable nature of Horn s conviction still ignite firestorms of controversy in Wyoming.

Before he was hanged Horn said, I have lived about fifteen ordinary lives. I would like to have had somebody who saw my past and could picture it to the public. It would be the most god damn interesting reading in the country. Now author Chip Carlson provides that reading.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...with this latest work he [Chip Carlson] must be considered the authority on Tom Horn. This work is a definite must for those interested in outlaws and lawmen as well as for those who love a mystery. The question of Horn's guilt or innocence can still be the reason for arguments in Wyoming today." --Chuck Parsons, National Association for Outlaw and Lawman History, Inc.

More About the Author

Chip Carlson, a 32-year resident of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is a renowned historian of the Old West and considered the world's leading expert on Tom Horn, who was hanged for the murder of a 14-year-old boy -- probably for a crime he did not commit.
Carlson is a native of Pennsylvania, was raised in New Jersey, and is a graduate of Colgate University.
He has lived and traveled extensively in the Western Hemisphere, having studied in Argentina and worked in Mexico and Puerto Rico. He speaks fluent Spanish and has acted as an interpreter for the US District Court and the Wyoming Public Defender.
Carlson has authored three non-fiction books and scores of articles in national and regional publications.
He has given dozens of presentations on Tom Horn in four Rocky Mountain states and is much sought after for these popular, dramatic programs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING WESTERN SAGA, August 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon : Dark History of the Murderous Cattle Detective (Paperback)
Introduced to the epic of Tom Horn by the excellent western movie starring Steve McQueen, I wanted to find a book and read more about the history of a man who, on the one hand, seemed a ruthless killer and on the other seemed the unfortunate dupe of the big business of the day--the cattle barons.

Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon: The Dark History of the Murderous Cattle Detective fit the bill marvelously. I came away with what I believe is an accurate history of the hapless Tom Horn and, more interestingly, names of several interesting characters who contributed to the demise of arguably a great American hero.

Key among these characters was Joe LeFors, the very same detective and lawman who made life miserable for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Named Joe Bell in the movie, LeFors methods were, shall we say, "creative."

We are tempted to believe that political scandals, scapegoats and other applicable cloak and dagger are primarily of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Read Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon... and find out the rest of the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of research - wish more time had been spent on the writing!, August 4, 2009

This review is from: Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon : Dark History of the Murderous Cattle Detective (Paperback)
Chip Carlson has certainly done his research for this book. Unfortunately, he hasn't brought it all together in a cohesive and readable manner. His narrative often meanders on tangents that are superfluous to the story, filled with anecdotes and trivia, that while demonstrating Carlson's keen grasp of his subject matter, add little to the story of Tom Horn. If you are looking for a first-read about Tom Horn, this is not the book for you. On a positive note, the book does have a good collection of vintage photographs of many of the personalities and settings involved in the Tom Horn saga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Horn Blood on the Moon, February 9, 2003

This review is from: Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon : Dark History of the Murderous Cattle Detective (Paperback)
An exceptional documentary dealing with one of Wyoming's most notorious citizens, one that reads like a novel. Although much has been written about Tom Horn, Chip Carlson has done an excellent job of presenting new facts and information furthing adding to the controversey over Horn's guilt in the murder of young Willie Nickell.
