Tom Still Has It!!,
By Carolyn (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tom Jones - Live at This Moment [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I purchased this video after seeing Tom live in a concert he held in Englewood, NJ. After all these years of following Tom, and purchasing his songs, he still has what it takes to get people off their seats! This video is great!!! I can't wait for the next one! What a treat! I think he is as handsome as he was in the 60's/70's. His voice never fails. The camera work on this video is very good; got some fantastic shots here. And yes, the ladies are still throwing their underwear at him on this video (and in the live concert I attended). I probably would have too, if I sat closer! Tom, if you ever read these reviews, I'd like to thank you for so much enjoyment. You WILL be remembered not only for your great performances, but your "vocal ability". Great performance. Buy it!

It's Not Unusual--Another Great Tom Jones Performance,

This review is from: Tom Jones - Live at This Moment [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Tom Jones has so long suffered from his jokey Vegas image and off-stage reputation for wild, orgiastic parties and paternity suits that many "serious" music people have discounted his immense talent and blistering showmanship. (One guy who knew a good thing when he saw it was Elvis Presley, who virtually stole Jones' act, contrary to popular belief.) Jones has always been something of an anomaly in the music world--a macho stud with hair on his chest in a business filled with lots of wishy-washy guys who could go either way. This 1989 concert finds Jones at the mid-century mark, and he hasn't lost much. He still stuffs his bulges in skintight duds and lewdly gyrates his hips and wags his eyebrows at the overheated females in the first row. But it's that odd, hard-to-define Welsh voice that puts Jones over the top, a voice out of Ray Charles and Little Richard by way of the working-class slums of Wales. And unlike many jaded, seasoned performers, Jones has never lost the joy in facing an audience, singing old warhorses like "It's Not Unusual" for the millioneth time. He gives it his all again, whether singing stripteasers like "Deliah," country cornballs like "Green Green Grass Of Home," rockers like "Satisfaction," ballads like "At This Moment," or funk like Prince's "Kiss." Jones' prodigious vocal skills put him in a category with the late, great Bobby Darin; there doesn't seem to be any musical genre he can't handle. This is an essential video for any Jones' fan (admitted or not) or anyone who still cares about crack showmanship in an age of also-rans and mediocrity. BUY IT.

Tom Jones at his Best !!,
By Noreen (Sunny Florida) - See all my reviews

This is a great video that shows Tom Jones at what he does best- live stage shows. He does all his great old standards and some newer songs also. He has a great rapport with the audience and such a stage presence he is wonderful to watch. His dance moves and sexy attitude just add to his charisma. I met him in person around the time this video came out (we stayed at the same hotel) and he was wonderful in person also. He stopped to talk to me, and has the same off-stage personna he has onstage. His smile is dazzling and his singing and stage moves are at his best in this video. One of my very favorites !!

Those of us who have been Tom Jones' fans since his beginnng know it's absolutely impossible to ever get enough of him. If you can't make it to Vegas or Atlantic City to see him in person, purchasing this video will give you the opportunity to look and listen at your leisure like I did, over and over again. With that magnificent voice, great biceps, tight buns, and a lethal bump and grind that should be patented, Tom Jones is the total package. Footage of any Tom Jones performance is hard to find, so grab this one with both hands.

Tom Jones simply has the best voice!,

This live performance treats one to the greatest vocal cores in the world. Jones does show some graceful aging but still is unmatched by any singer ever to belt out a note. The after show talk in Jones' limo reminds one of Elvis's live performance gig in the 70's. However this live vocal masterpiece makes one want to borrow Tom's talent and get on stage just once. Listen and learn....Tom Jones is the BEST!

Tom Jones Doin' His Thing As Only He Can Do,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tom Jones - Live at This Moment [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Tom Jones has an amazing voice, which can't be said of most of his musical contemporaries. I knew this when I bought the "What's New Pussycat" and "Thunderball" singles way back when. And in '89 he still had it, without a doubt - this video proves it. In some ways his performance is more impressive 25 years later. The burlesque stuff has less weight here, so the music has more value. The technical direction is excellent, as the audience is not excluded, as in many videos. One final comment: to the reviewer from Anaheim - Elvis did borrow more than a few bits from Tom, in fact, one must assume that Elvis realized early in his comeback that if he had to "compete" with Tom , he'd have to give up the lullabys and really belt out the numbers. However, Tom himself owes his own musical debt to Mr. Richard Penniman and Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis. That doesn't mean that TJ isn't a true original!!

Lookin' Good! I'm not going to go into song by song detail or address the video quality (although I found the sound and videography to be excellent), nor am I going to discuss what a huge Tom Jones fan I am (although I am). OK - so what's left? This great performance captured on tape for all of us TJ fans out there to treasure always is near perfection! Let's face it - if you love Tom Jones then you are going to love this video. If you are not a TJ fan, you won't buy it. It's that simple. My humble opinion: If you are a Tom Jones fan, you want this video in your collection. It is among my favorite concert videos (and I have everything from Barry Manilow to The Who) as it captures the feel of being right there in front of Tom. I've never had the opportunity to see Tom live (but hope one day I can) so this video is a very nice treasure to have and made me get a sense of "being there."There is no need to go into the concert itself. Simply put, ALL great music and Tom is as enticing as ever here! It is just pure Tom Jones. Nobody can hold an audience in the palm of his hand like Tom Jones which becomes obvious with this video. Nobody has a voice like Tom. He is a true original and can not be duplicated. He has the energy on stage that only very few entertainers have. And, let's be blunt - few singers are as sexy as Mr. Jones; nobody looks like Tom in those tight pants, or can swivel those hips like Tom. He has only become more charismatic with age! This video proves why Tom is still such a sex-god to his adoring fans. But what it all really boils down to is the music (although it is certainly nice to watch him perform it!) His song selections couldn't be better and his voice is crystal clear. On the rockers, there is no way you can't have a smile on your face. He just makes you feel good. I believe he has one of the best rock voices of all times and is way too under-rated there. As for the ballads, well - nobody delivers them like long, tall Tom! There is something about his phrasing and that unique, soulful voice that grabs you, moves you and makes you feel deeply. This concert video does all of that. So, what are waiting for? If you a Tom Jones fan, buy this video. Tom at his delicious best!
