Tom falls in love with Anna the moment he sees her in the hardware store, and almost as quickly, she falls in love with him. Their relationship is obsessive and intense, although relatively chaste. Anna is visiting an ailing aunt and still recovering from the accidental death of her brother the previous summer. Tom and Anna are gentle and honest and clearly perfect for each other. Important issues are woven into the fabric of the story and create texture: the emotional aftermath of abortion, conflicting feelings about a co-worker who is both dishonest and supportive, anti-Semitism, acquaintance rape, and the death of both young and old--all of these events draw Tom and Anna closer, giving depth to a blossoming relationship. Tom's descriptions of family and friends are brief compared to his exposition on Anna, but are so precise that they spring to life. Tom has absorbed every nuance of Anna and the 15 days that he spends with her, and he releases it all in a rambling, passionate monologue filled with evocative, exacting detail. This is true teenage love, pure and sincere, and told with integrity. --Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System
