Damn The Torpedoes Trailer

Biography

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70s. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc The Live Anthology, which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it ... Read more in Amazon's Tom Petty Store

Editorial Reviews

Import pressing includes one bonus track over the US edition, 'Anything That's Rock'N'Roll'. Originally lumped in with the burgeoning New Wave and Power Pop scenes when his debut album came out in 1977, Petty and his band of merry men soon became darlings of the critics and, in turn, became Classic Rock radio staples. They've outlasted all of their original contemporaries and have creating some of the most memorable and durable Pop/Rock songs of the last 30 years. This single disc collection features 19 track total, covering his output between 1977 and 1993. Includes the hits, 'American Girl', 'Refugee', 'Breakdown', 'Into the Great Wide Open' and many more. Universal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Petty Greatest Hits Tab March 5, 2011
Format:Sheet music
Apart from loving his music, I have to start by saying that this is probably one of the clearest tab books I've ever learnt from. The tab is clear, the page turns are kept to a minimum and each part is broken down perfectly to learn. Where this book really excels though is in the first few pages of glossy photos, as well as a song by song analysis by Tom himself explaining how each song came about. You don't often get this in a tab book, and coupled with the clear notation this has to be one of the best tab books I've ever bought.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

I actually like few songs out of this CD. My favorite one is Learning to Fly. I did not regret bought this CD. I will keep them into my collection. Tom Petty is a hell of a musician. Thanks.

I am a huge Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan. I have been as long as I can remember. I saw them not even two weeks ago at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival right in front of the stage. They were spectacular, and they proved why everyone must go see a Heartbreakers show at least once. These guys are all 60 or pushing 60 and they still have it. Go see them if you get the chance.

On that note, I thought I'd review the now legendary 'Greatest Hits' album. This album is probably the album that every casual Tom Petty fan owns. I'll admit it -- this was the album that got me hooked on Tom Petty. It had all of the songs I had heard on the radio up to that point and a handful of tracks that seldom got played on the radio but were just as good as the radio hits.

This album contains just about everything the easily-pleased Petty fan would want. 'American Girl,' 'Breakdown,' 'I Need to Know,' 'Breakdown,' 'The Waiting,' 'Refugee,' 'You Got Lucky.' They're all here. If you just want the Petty songs that you hear on classic rock radio on a frequent basis and those songs only, look no further than 'Greatest Hits.' It collects them all for you in a nice little affordable package and in great sound. The sound quality here is superb, better than 90% of CDs that are released in this over-compressed MP3 world (the "loudness war," for the layman).

Now, I've laid out the positives, here are the negatives.

I love 'Full Moon Fever.' It revived Petty's career in 1989. The fact is, though, that it is not a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album -- it is a Tom Petty album. Sure, Mike Campbell plays on every track. Yes, I get that. But the rest of the Heartbreakers are absent (for the most part).
