MOO! ARF! QUACK!

What kind of cat makes noises like that? A little cat with a big personality! You see, sometimes Tom feels more like a cow, or a snail, or even a kangaroo than a cat. What a silly goose! But one thing is for sure, Mom and Dad Cat love their little cat no matter who he thinks he is. And one day, he even surprises himself! With fresh, spare illustrations that beguile, Noah Woods has created a lovable new character all kids can identify with.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

PreS. Using arresting geometric shapes to form Tom, his main character (circles for the head and body, triangles for ears, and rectangular arms and legs), Woods introduces a kitten who is a little different: he quacks, moos, and even arfs. When told that cats like to chase mice, Tom says, "Then I must be an elephant . . . mice scare me." OK, so Tom is something of an oddball as he tries to build a nest and jumps up and down like a kangaroo, but his parents agree they'll love him no matter what animal he thinks he is. One day, however, Tom meows, and his new, improved persona is formed. Woods' computer-enhanced artwork uses a minimum of images (though many are quite large), scattered across crisp, white pages. The elemental, sparely used shapes give the art the distinction of looking vintage, hip, and modern at the same time, and the message about marching to a different drummer will resonate with children, who, like Tom, may not fit into the mold. 5.0 out of 5 stars A book that makes you smile!, April 27, 2004

Every year there are more and more new children's books hitting the shelves, but very few of them stand out. "Tom Cat" is one that does. This book is a true delight to look at and read. A great story of self discovery and awareness that is told with fun, humor, imagination and pure innocence. Mr. Woods has written and illustrated a book that kids today will be reading to their kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the non-conformist in everyone!, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Tom Cat (Picture Book) (Hardcover)
Tom is not your ordinary cat. In fact, you could think of him as the black sheep of the family. Or maybe he's a duck... He does love baths, after all. Perhaps, though, he's a pig (mud is awfully fun). He's scared of mice, so he might be an elephant.m And on and on it goes. Tom can bark and oink, but he never, ever meows. At every turn, his parents patiently see Tom through his idiosyncracities, and remind him that they love him, no matter what. And then one day, the most unexpected sound comes out of Tom's mouth...

This book approaches a complex, and sometimes difficult topic -- feeling like you don't belong -- with great humor and gentleness. Even the most well-adjusted little kid will love this funny book, and even relate to it (who hasn't been called a silly goose, after all?) The illustrations are as vivid and different as the rest of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book, September 23, 2008
This review is from: Tom Cat (Picture Book) (Hardcover)
I am a Pediatrician working in a busy ER and this book captures the imaginations of children perfectly. Its wonderfully illustrated and has a design and story that really allow for interaction between the child and the reader. Highly recommended.
