I have this CD and if you are a true lover of the music from the 1960's then you MUST add this to your collection. The Rockin' Rebels had a unique history in rock and roll music. Unlike many bands that were one hit wonders, these musicians from Buffalo NY produced timeless pices of music. Tommy Shannon discovered them and bought these fine young gentlemen to become Bill Board's Instrumentalists of the year. I discovered them at the age of 5 and I still listen to them. (I'm not that old, 37) Trust me when I say this album is a must. Their biggest hit Wild Weekend and my personal favorite Another Wild Weekend will make you rock and roll like you never did before.

Wow...what a time machine! Put this CD on and it transports you back to the late 50's early 60's. Even if you never listened to WKBW DJ of the time, Tom Shannon, the music of the Rockin Rebels is still meaningful. Fully intrumental, it allows you to cruise down a 21st century highway, but the aura in the car is the time when life was simple and fun. It is a great buy!

When R&R began to take firm control of the national singles charts in the mid-1950s, one of the sub-genres (along with Doo-Wop and the Girl-Group Sound) that would one day become highly collectable was the R&R instrumental. Some cite Lenny Dee's driving Plantation Boogie in early 1955 as the first while others point to the Bill Doggett Combo's immortal Honky Tonk Parts 1 & 2 and Sil Austin's Slow Walk, both in late 1956, as the beginning. Whatever the case they were soon joined by the likes of Bill Justis, Ernie Freeman, Link Wray & His Ray Men, Duane Eddy & The Rebels, Santo & Johnny, Sandy Nelson, Johnny & The Hurricanes, The Tornadoes and The Ventures, among many more too numerous to mention.

Those are certainly the names that will pop into mind when the subject comes up, but rarely will anyone mention The Hot-Toddys/Rebels/Rockin' Crickets. And yet, not only did they have one huge hit in that period, the story surrounding that and their other charting side (which registered twice four years apart and under different names) is interesting, to say the least. It began when Buffalo, New York DJ Tom Shannon of WKBW and his friend/manager Phil Todero composed an instrumental they called Rockin' Crickets and had it released on their own label, which used a combination of their surnames - Shan-Todd - coupled with Shakin' And Stompin' as the flipside by The Hot-Toddys featuring Bill Pernell (Shan-Todd 0056). In reality, this was a Canadian group calling themselves Big John Little & The Rockers, and Bill Pernell was a sax player from the Belleville, Ontario area. It did modestly well, reaching # 57 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in April-May 1959.
