5.0 out of 5 stars A "real-time" review of TomTom 2009 US and Canada Map Update
I've used TomTom Go 730 for a couple of years. I have been updating the map corrections and the TomTom Home software regularly, but I haven't actually purchased a new map up until now. I noticed that in the few travels I do, new roads will appear and even airports relocate. Last week, when I missed my plane because the old map led me to the old site, I said to myself,...

3.0 out of 5 stars I thought there would be more.
I received the product as stated and when predicted no damages but was expecting more information to be logged on the TomTom GPS, but that is only my let down thank goodness for Map Share.

I've used TomTom Go 730 for a couple of years. I have been updating the map corrections and the TomTom Home software regularly, but I haven't actually purchased a new map up until now. I noticed that in the few travels I do, new roads will appear and even airports relocate. Last week, when I missed my plane because the old map led me to the old site, I said to myself, "That's it! Time for a new map!" If I were to purchase a map from the manufacturer, it would have cost me about eight-nine bucks. However, Amazon offered the same map almost forty bucks cheaper with the mapd update card. Once I received the card, I synced my TomTom and hit the activation menu. Lo and behold, the screen changed to a form where I could enter the activation code. (I was anxious that I would have to call TomTom support, as some other reviewers had reported, but I was relieved when I didn't have to.) After that, I could confirm which version I was downloading, and I opened up a browser and went to the manufacturer's website to see if I was getting the same map. And I was. So, I hit the next button, and here I am writing this review as I am downloading the map. The funny thing is that it's taking me about 40-50 minutes to download the map. Oh well. I'm still satisfied because I didn't have to cough up forty more dollars for it. By the way, I just learned that Amazon is now offering a direct download of the map, which really makes more sense. Currently it seems to be slightly more expensive to do that, but hey, you don't have to wait a couple of days for the card to arrive. Finally, the entire program is downloaded after 40 minutes. It's now copying to my internal card, which is probably out of memory at this point. I guess it will overwrite the old map. It's taking me several minutes, even to copy the new map to the device. Update is complete, and I was able to confirm the new airport address and some newer roads that weren't previously on the old map.

I ordered the Map Update card for my TomTom One, 1st Edition, then couldn't get the thing to load. I am way too smart to need help, ask my wife. So, I worked for a couple hours, getting the same result. Nada.

THEN I called TomTom Suport. The tech rep spent about a half-hour on the phone, walking me through updating my TOMTOM Home software, knowing how to perform administrative actions on my Mac. He next talked me through the actual map download process. He showed patience, knowledge and tact, far beyond the typical support I have received from software/hardware companies. And, yes, the downloaded map works just fine.

I got exactly what I expected. The latest map for my Tomtom 920 at a much lower price than I could have gotten it for directly from Tomtom. Note these have an expiration date so don't buy it too far in advance.

Just purchased the update this week. Arrived when expected in excellent condition. The problem was the TomTom 2009 US map update expired 12/31/09. Sadly we are returning it to Amzon tomorrow.

I recently purchased and installed the update to my refurbished TomTom 730 (also purchased from Amazon), which came with very outdated maps. The process was extremely easy, as it is done through the TomTom Home software. Just start the software, plug the unit via USB cable to the computer and, once connected, click on "use my activation code". It takes quite a while for the update to be downloaded and installed, as the maps take up 2GB of space, but I now have fully up to date maps.

I'm not sure why some people have encountered problems doing this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought it., October 20, 2009

It should be noted that the box that I received from Amazon contains only a "download code" from the manufacturer that allows the update from their server and a brief (4 line) instruction.

The minimal instructions that were enclosed did not work. I then visited the manufacturer's web site and tried to find a procedure that would work but that was not successful. Finally I called the customer support line and spent about 20 minutes talking with a lady who required me to forward a copy of the Amazon purchase documentation before she would help me with the installation. When she received the email and was convinced that it was legitimate then she enabled the update.

Although the GPS maps were indeed updated it was not an easy process. I would not do this again considering that I have a two year old device. It would have been better to buy a new GPS and donate the old one to someone who wouldn't mind having 2 year old maps.

I purchased this card in the hopes of updating the map on my 2 year old Tomtom Go 510. However, after numerous attempts to activate it via tomtom home, I kept getting the message error "The activation code you entered is valid but the associated product doesn't work with your device type or with the version of the application you have installed on it. Please install the latest version of the device application by clicking 'Update my device' in the main menu. Then enter your activation code again." However, everything was fully up to date. After being on the phone with tomtom support, they had to manually activate it though a long and grueling process. If you want to avoid a long 30+ minute process in order to get this card to work, skip it and buy it from an authorized tomtom retailer or directly through them.
