Got it out of the box and did a full backup like many others have suggested. That took more than an hour. Then downloaded a new map. After an hour, TomTom Home reports an error. Tried again. Another hour later, another error.

Tried to delete the map. Map not found, but something's still occupying more than 1Gb on the device. Checked online. Found a helpful post that says delete everything on the device and do an update. Did that. 30 mins later, got the new application installed. Tried map update. This time it seems to work. Left it running and went to bed.

Next morning, found that PC has gone into sleep mode. Woke PC up. Map updates 80% complete. Home continued where it left off. Another hour later, tried the device. Says "Map not found". Looks like the PC going to sleep messed it up.

Two days later. Still can't use the blasted thing. I'm returning this POS if I can't get it working by today.

TomTom, if you're listening, you have *got* to upgrade the USB on this device.

Update:

Ok, finally got everything setup and running. Here's what I learned.

1. Turn suspend off on the PC when downloading new maps. It'll take a while and if your computer goes to sleep in the meantime, you start fresh.
2. Memory is limited on this device. So do a full backup first, then free up everything you don't need. The best way to do this is delete *all* files on the device. Yes, all. To do this, access the device like you would a USB drive, then reformat.
3. Then install TomTom Home on your computer from their website. Then do a software update, then maps, then voice. This gives you the smallest possible footprint on your device. There are some things you just don't need, like the install program for the PC *and* MAC, both of which are found on the device out of the box.
4. Don't pull your hair out if the device says there's no compatible voice even after you've loaded one. Do a full reset. To do this with the latest application (at the time of writing), start with the device off. Then press and hold the power button. The device will powerup with a drumbeat sound effect, then go to a diagnostic screen. Hold down the power button all this time. After the diag screen, the device will power down, then reboot. Now release the power button. Then setup device as before.

Overall, its a good device with lots of options once you get past the annoying setup phase. All the settable options means that its easy to get distracted on the road with this thing however, so plan accordingly and don't drive into a ditch.

After reading both positive and negative reviews, we decided to purchase this because it was a front page slickdeals find ($100 just before Black Friday). Unfortunately we went ahead and did the map update (after freeing up space by removing the optional languages, as others recommended) and the unit froze. Customer service at TomTom was great, and they tried walking us through how to reconfigure the unit but apparently we had a faulty device, so the unit couldn't be reset to download a map update. CS said if we exchange for another device we should have no problems with updates, but eventually we've decided to return and get a Garmin. For the price, we were really hoping this would've had no problems from the start!

There are many complaints about the update process for this product. There may be other reasons why this turns into a bad experience but mine was because I didn't read the boring directions.
* When you take this device out of the box it does NOT know that it has a lifetime maps subscription. I assumed it was delivered ready for lifetime maps and I suspect this has happend to others.
* Before doing any updating you should install tomtom home and backup the device. This will allow you to recover the original setup in case something go awry.
* It is imperative that you read the boring directions before attempting an update ( also see [...]).
* You must use the activation code (printed on a card in the box) as part of the update process (as explained in the boring directions). If you just connect it to the computer and start the update process it gets the next purchasable map from tomtom. This map must be activated and your activation code that came in the box will NOT work.
* And be prepared to wait because it takes a very long time to download the maps then update the device.

I know all this because I found out the hard way. Luckily I did a backup from which I could recover the original condition of the device and then perform the steps correctly by referring to the boring instructions.

NOTE: it is my understanding that for those of us with more than one device we must create a separate account for each of them. I have not attempted this but it sure seems like the tomtom should be able to accommodate this better - especially now that they are becoming more affordable. We have one in every car now.

If the update process was not so traumatic I would have given it a better raiting overall. I should be able to do the update without refering to the boring instructions. Maybe the software could just ask me if I have a Lifetime Maps Activation code before installing other stuff unintentionally.
