This review is last updated Nov 2014 (firmware 1.8.19)

I have probably updated this review almost 10 times now... why? Thanks to improvements in the software since the watch was first launched. If you're one who sees glass half full, you might feel used by TomTom to be a beta tester. But truthfully, there were many new features added and existing ones refined over the last year or so!

TomTom has refined many existing features (e.g. Cycle) and introduced new ones (e.g. Interval, Stopwatch). I am rewriting this review as many of the issues has been addressed.

==================
Background:
I'm training for Triathlon and have used the Garmin 910XT (borrowed), and Garmin Swim (owned). Few minutes after I placed my order for 910xt, I learned about this TomTom watch. I canceled the order and eagerly waited for the Tomtom. Garmin 910xt is currently the king of Tri watch, but at twice the price - 399! (It was offering at 299 in May'13. Watch only). While it's unfair to expect this watch to be as capable, it has LOTS OF POTENTIAL though if the TomTom programmers can fix some stuff.

EXCELLENT:
======
Watch itself - THE HARDWARE IS THE BEST THING. It is Slim and light. This is critical for a sports watch. 910xt is smaller than 310xt but its still bulky and heavy for my taste. You feel it when you're swimming and running, not just the weight but the water and wind resistance. TomTomMS feels very comfortable and effortless when I swing my arms in water or running. I've used it on wetsuit and on bare wrist, and both are fine. Unlike the Garmin 910xt's quick release, which many has complained it may drop into the sea, the TomTom watch is encased in the strap in a smart way that won't dislodge.

Hello K. Chua, thank you for the very detailed review and comments. I've shared it internally with the product team and I know they are already working on many of the points in your improvement list. We'll update customers with new software versions as soon as we're ready. It's very useful to get specific feedback like yours, so that our product team can act quickly.

Regarding your comment on the support site - it's possible you checked just before the page went live. The Runner and Multi-Sport actually share a support section - it can be found here: http://bit.ly/19d2Wja. Looking forward to your updates after using the watch more.

7/25 Update: Hi again K. Chua, thank you for the further feedback. I've shared your comments internally. The team is already working on improving accuracy with Swim and Cycle metrics. Those sections you mention on MySports will be activated, but I don't have specific timing yet. Will keep you posted. For the time being, we recommend uploading your Cycle logs to MapMyRide. Lastly, wanted to share we will be adding feet input for pool length in an upcoming update as well.

08/28 Update: Version 1.3.1 of the watch software is now available for download. Major new features include lap pace, input of pool length in both feet and meters, support for the 4iiii Bluetooth HRM and notifications in case you are running in demo mode.

For the full list of updates please visit: http://bit.ly/19N6Ddb

We will keep releasing more updates and functionality moving forward.

UPDATE: 11/18/2013
We are happy to announce that last week, we released an update for your watch. You are welcome to connect to MySport and download it.Here are some of the Updated features:
Version 1.5.1

-Pausing and stopping an activity
You can now choose to press and hold the left button for approx. 1 second to pause or stop an activity. This helps prevent accidental pausing or stopping of an activity.
You can turn the press and hold function on and off in the settings.

-Stopwatch
You can now use the stopwatch function on both the TomTom Runner watch and the TomTom Multi-Sport watch. You can find Stopwatch on the activities screen. Stopwatch supports laps. To use laps move right from the activity screen or touch the area on the screen for the backlight.

Improvements and fixes

-The buzz (vibration) in watch menus works again.
-We have resolved an issue that caused watches set to languages other than English to crash when races were selected.
-Several smaller bug fixes and performance improvements have been implemented.

Even though I'm giving this 4-stars, I'm on the fence. I do like that it is smaller than any of the available Garmin choices because I have small wrists. As the other review has said it needs a yards option for swim laps since nearly all US pools are either 25 yards or 50 meters.

Battery life seems better than my Garmin bike computer and GPS connect seems to be just as fast.

Main Gripe:
The swim, bike, run display options are a little frustrating because their are three display field (top left, top right and main large display) So there are 5-7 display options for each event but only three spaces to display them.

Maybe I'm missing it but there doesn't seem to be a way to select what shows up on the main large display without playing around with the left and right display and hoping the main display defaults to what you want. This is frustrating since the top left and right are really too small to easily read when you are in motion.

If it just records my runs and bike rides accurately for a couple years I think it is worth the $, but it needs some tweaks.

Four month update: Like most gadgets it is great when it works, frustrating when it doesn't. It seems to be variable in finding satellites. I start in the same open field on most runs and sometime it take 30 seconds and sometimes 3 minutes. Once it is locked in it does quite well even when I run through some fairly narrow canyon trails.

Hi Dennis, I'm glad to see that you've taken a liking to the watch. Wanted to give you a hand with the main watch display - simply press Up or Down mid training and you can scroll through the different modes.
Hope this helps.

I have been using this watch for about a month. So far I have used it on 7 swims (pool and open), 5 cycling and 6 runs including one triathlon.

Hardware:

As has been noted, the hardware is slick! I know Garmins are awesome, but you can see the gigantic goiter-looking bulge on the wearer's arm from 100ft. I wear mine as a day-to-day watch and it fits and looks great.

The main body of the watch can be removed very easily and attached to the bike mount (included) in seconds. The display is crisp and large. I have no problem reading from my wrist or bike. I really like how the wristband is one single unit. I have broken a couple of bands on other watches right at the hinge where the band connects to the watch. Because the band on this watch is a single piece, there are no hinges, the computer just snaps up into the center of the watch band.

The big button separate from the watch is genius! On other watches you end up having to cover the display while you hit buttons. Then you have to move your hand to see if you hit the button right, then move on to the next step. No so with this watch. Because the button is separate from the display, it is simple to navigate.

Use:

Running - no complaints. Extremely accurate, great display. No problems whatsoever.

Cycling - no complaints. I love the bike mount and how easy it is to pull the watch out of the band and attach it to the bike mount. I do wish it had auto-pause, but I mainly cycle on open country roads so it doesn't bother me much.

One thing to be aware of when removing watch from the bike mount is the watch is a bit slippery, especially if you are already sweating.

I switched from a Garming Forerunner 305 to this Tom Tom rather than upgrading the Garmin
The good:
I am a beginner to triathlon and wanted to a watch that would be helpful in all three disciplines but didn't want to spend a ton of money. Tom Tom watch is much lighter and fits on my wrist better. I like the flatter profile, especially in winter when I have to pull up my sleeves to view the watch. I don't have good luck with touch screens and have a difficult reading smaller screens. The display on this watch is fairly easy to see and the one button control is very easy to use. My Garmin was a little more involved when it came to setting up workouts or interval training but I have been able to do it on the Tom TOm prety quickly. I like the fact that you can set the backlight to stay on during an activity - helpful for group activities in lower light setting so I don't have to continually hit the light button. (If my Garmin could do that I never knew it). And the vibrate/tone feature indicating the end pre-set intervals is appreciated.
Basically I really like the watch itself. although I have yet to use it for biking or swimming. so far just running. Sometimes the satellites take a while to load and you can't start an activity until they do. with my Garmin I could start the activity and it would catch up.

The UGLY!:
Getting the data off of the watch the way I need it is HORRIBLE!! The TomTom MYSports sight is really a waste of time right now. there is very little useful information retrieved there. There is more history stored on the watch. You can sync the data to several other sites, (MapMyFitness, RunKeeper) and save the data in different formats but you can not retrieve it the way you want.

Hi Kathleen, I'm sorry to read you are not entirely satisfied with the Multi-Sport. We are working hard to get MySports in optimal condition, and improving the connectivity to the other sites. I will be sharing your feedback to the relevant teams.
