1.0 out of 5 stars Software on Amazon, March 27, 2005
This review is from: TomTom Navigator Software for Pocket PC (70116.085) (Office Product)
When selling software, it is very important to mention the version of the software. I was trying to buy TomTom Navigator on Amazon. So, I was very happy when I found it. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the version of the software being offered. This in unacceptable. When I zoomed in the picture representing the package, it appeared that the version number on the box was 2.0. The current version of TomTom navigator is 3; they are about to release version 5. In other words, you were selling an outdated version of a software package and the buyer had no way to know about it. Shame on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal GPS Navigation at its BEst, August 11, 2005
This review is from: TomTom Navigator Software for Pocket PC (70116.085) (Office Product)
I purchased this a few years ago and it works flawless with a good gps reciever. I personally like the Syson CF recievers over blue tooth.

The only problem that I have is with the company TomTom itself not the software. For one thing the TomTom website is cluttered and utterly confusing at times. Secondly, TomTom is an European based company that caters primarily to its European based customers and leaves Americans in the cold. For some reason the Europeans were way ahead of us on portable GPS usage. Its taken a while for GPS to catch on in the United States but its comming around. I guess they figured we dont know or care about GPS so why bother.

The European maps get all the cool updates within a timely manner and more features. The American based software gets little to no support and what updates we do get are several months behind, costly, and you have to go through a lenghty, tedious ordering process to recieve them. So pretty much what buy in the package is what you are stuck with. Which is okey becasue the software is truly fabulous and cutting edge, But come on guys be fair us too!!

I dont like that the maps are not seamless. Meaning you cant program a direct route from east coast to west coast. You have plan your route in sections according to what region of the US map you install. I can only guess that this is because to make seemless maps would take up alot more resourses on our tiny 512mb sd cards can hold......and yes I am aware of 1gig cards.

I heard that TomTom3 has a feature where you can navigate to a Lat and Long instead of just a street address. Which is great if your someone like me that mountain bikes alot and trail heads dont have standard street address's to navigate too. This feature was not continued on TomTom 4 and maybe not 5 as well.

Another feature I wish they would fix is that when your transitioning from one freeway to another. The software lets you know to take the next freeway but does not indicate E W N or S. You have to rely on the positioning of an arrow on the graphical interface. Which is okey but if you have any type of GPS lag during the transition you'll find yourself guessing which direction to take right up to the off ramps. If the software would let you know ahead of time that in 3 miles you need to take the 405 (South) instead of just the 405 you can be more easily prepared and in the correct lanes ahead of time.
[...]
With all that said, this is truly by far the best navigation software you can purchase for your PDA. The 3D graphics are top notch and very easy to understand at a glance. The user interface is easy to understand and highly programable. The voice prompts are very clear and easy to understand.

This review is for TomTom2 which is now 3 years old and fairly dated. Go with TomTom5 which just released to US customers. Im sure support for US products will improve. Cant get much worse.

I just purchased TomTom5 and not the upgrade from TomTom2 but the new, full version. I would not be a repeat customer if I did not believe this was great product.
