4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
I'm very pleased with this GPS. The new IQ routing feature I believe significantly improves the routing from previous TomTom models. Even if you don't still don't like where it wants to take you, it adjusts itself quickly to where how you probably want to travel. It's still not perfect, which I don't think there is a GPS system or even an online map system that is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Garmin is much better
I own a Garmin (comparative in price)and I have tried this TomTom. The TomTom is very easy to use and set up is great. It's very compact. I like how you can download other owner's street corrections. It also has a lot of customizing features.

What I don't like.
The TomTom seems to always pick out of the way directions both in distance and in time...

It's still not perfect, which I don't think there is a GPS system or even an online map system that is. And of course the Mapshare system is great by allowing you to edit the maps yourself and share them. The advance lance guidance is a nice feature which can help on highways you're not familiar with.

I find the TomTom One very good and fairly easy to use once you get used to it. The clarity on lane changes and exit is excellent and very helpful when bypassing cities. Portability is exceptional as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Garmin is much better, April 29, 2010

I own a Garmin (comparative in price)and I have tried this TomTom. The TomTom is very easy to use and set up is great. It's very compact. I like how you can download other owner's street corrections. It also has a lot of customizing features.

What I don't like.
The TomTom seems to always pick out of the way directions both in distance and in time. Garmin picks the same routes I would have taken 9 out of 10 times.

You have to manually change the display from night to day. I leave very early in the morning so I need night-time display and then I have to change it back to day-time when I'm leaving work to go home. Not a big deal, but the Garmin does it automatically based on sunrise and sunset times (a nice feature while you are driving). You also cannot change the brightness on the display (you can on the Garmin).

If you zoom out on the display, it doesn't stay zoomed out. As soon as you come to the next calculated turn, it zooms in and stays zoomed in. The Garmin also zooms in for the turn but then zooms back out to where you set it.

After using both products, I love my Garmin and I am putting my TomTom on Ebay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Tom - my daily buddy, October 8, 2009
This review is from: TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
I travel Sunday through Friday for work, and then sometimes I travel with my family on the weekend. My Tom Tom (affectionately known as Gator Boy, he has an Australian voice, he should be Croc boy, but Gator Boy sounds better) is with me all the way. Now my husband's Tom Tom has Homer Simpson's voice - he's not allowed to travel with me. Homer isn't, my husband is allowed!

I travel all over the country, and even took my Tom Tom to Hawaii. Works like a charm (though sometimes I take the adventurous way...lol). Highly recommended travel companion!

Maybe I am unlike most of you, but my gut tells me this is not the case! I have a wonderful mother. Unfortunately, she is not tech savvy. For years, we've laughed at some of her fun sayings. Our favorite, is that she is going to 'fax you an email'. Why not just write an email Mom?

Regardless, her and my stepfather, were looking for a GPS and assigned me to the task. I read all about this model and figured that this would work for them. Surpringly, they figured it out with no problems whatsoever. I downloaded the manual as I offered myself as their personal tech support. The result: I've NEVER been contacted whatsoever. Yes, I have spent many hours on the phone with them trying to teach them how to zap their temporary internet files or troubleshoot their wireless (yikes) connection. However, as soon as they put it in the car, they were able to figure out all of the features and put it to use. They've not been lost since and were even able to navigate the city of Chicago with it, a feat that they previously would not have done. This is a great GPS and you can't beat the price and amount of features packed inside.

This is a great product for anyone. Very easy menus, very easy to use and higly valuable for long car trips. Just ask my mom as I am sure she will agree!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent GPS, January 16, 2010
This review is from: TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
When I connected gps to pc it didn't download tomtom home, I had to install it from the website. Once installed I ran my free one time update of the map..it took a long time and failed in the end..the error details said that I need to log in. seems like the long time signed me out.. tried again and this time it updated my maps..the whole update thing takes 2-3 hrs with 6mps line.

Once on the road, the gps seems to perform very well and got me to all places accurately, the lane guidance is simply great, I love this feature. I wish I got 140 s with street names, but since the unit shows the next direction street name on top of screen, that was good enough for me. To be frank initially I thought not having the spoken street names was a big blunder but now I realize that displaying the next exit street name on top is good enough that speaking it out..

I heard a few rumors of tomtom 140 having rerouting problems..so far I have tried many unfamiliar directions and the gps very quickly rerouted me..so no this gps dosent suffer from slow rerouting.

So all in all I am very happy so far...that is after a week of use...

It's pretty easy to use. On this version, it's seems that TomTom have fixed the mounting problems from previous versions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple but very useful, April 9, 2010

This review is from: TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
I wanted a basic and affordable GPS. It is doing a great job. I did hesitate between this version and the 140S which spells the name of the street instead of just saying 'turn right', but so far I don't think I need the S option, and the name of the street is written on the screen. Also it doesn't have real-time traffic report (and this is not a free service anyway even if your GPS can take it) it does have some knowledge of typical traffic at given time, like google map by example. However, the real-time could be nice for construction works. Itès very easy to use on the fly.

When I first got it, I plugged it to my computer, went on TomTom website to download their manager and did a bunch of updates. It is slow but it is working. Also TomTom has a great price for map update. Instead of paying $100 to buy one new map per year you pay $40 to get 4 updates per year...

If you are like me and just need basic GPS function for random or vacation trip, i.e. where timing is not an issue this is perfect. However, if you are a sales rep, get an advance model and pay for the updates and real-time info.

I also after trying both the 3D and 2D modes, I now use the 2D mode zoomed-out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Simple, February 24, 2010
This review is from: TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
Easy to use, can find anywhere I need to go. It takes a few minutes to acquire the satellite, but if I turn it on just before I go it's fine. People say it can be a little slow, but I'm in a big city and if I drive at a reasonable speed it has no problems keeping up. Very quick to adjust when I make a wrong turn. Overall, VERY pleased.

This is my second Tom Tom (I have one in Europe and one in the US), after having tried other brands. Basically, TomTom are so simple to use, easy to set up and do everything you need them to. On top of this, there are always new surprises - despite being market leader by a mile, they still keep innovating. For instance, on this one I found it had an advanced lane warning system which shows you a picture of which lane you should be in at each junction - this was SO helpful on the freeways of LA where you can have up to 6 or 7 lanes.
