I have used two different Garmin GPS units extensively (first a Quest II and then a Nuvi 550) on long distance motorcycle trips. The Quest was slow and the screen on the 550 was poor in sunlight but overall they were decent units. The Killer for me was Garmin's miserable map update system and terrible interface software.

So I purchased the Tomtom and have been favorably impressed. I must point out for experienced Garmin users that having Garmin experience can actually be a bit of a handicap at first. The Tomtom thinks and does things things differently than Garmin so don't get frustrated when it doesn't operate like a Garmin. In other words you are going to have to spend a bit of time getting to know the Tomtom.

The Tomtom Computer to GPS interface software that you download actually works very nicely unlike Garmin. It's east to pre-plan routes from your computer screen with your Tomtom connected via the provided USB cable. The unit has a nice size screen that has good visibility in sunlight compared to other GPS units.

My biggest gripe is the "Lifetime Free Map Updates". Tomtom makes it impossible for you to activate your Lifetime Free Map Updates online despite carefully following the instructions. There are many similar complaints to be found online, just Google "tomtom lifetime maps scam".

After a lot of online research I took the advice of others and called Tomtom Customer Service and had an agent after many questions activate my Lifetime Map subscription. I recommend the Tomtom, it's a good alternative to Garmin.

But come on Tomtom, it looks pretty obvious that you are intentionally making it difficult for customers to activate the "Lifetime Map Subscription" they paid for while at the same time sending them emais advertising a $70.00 12 month map update.

Received my unit a couple weeks ago. Installation was a breeze. Only complaint I have is that the cable that goes to the battery could have been about 6 inches longer. Since I mounted mine up on the dash, I had to add some wire in order to reach my fusebox. Not a big deal. Had I mounted it on the handlebars there would have been plenty.

I've never owned a GPS before so I have nothing to compare it to but I found the interface very easy to learn. Spent about 10 minutes playing with it on the couch the night I got it and felt I had it pretty much mastered. The touchscreen works great even with my heavy rain gloves on. Route and re-route calculations are very fast. The Winding Route feature is awesome. It paired with my Sena SMH10 with no problem even though that headset is not on their official headset compatibility list. Went on a ride last weekend that was mostly fire roads and was surprised that the unit knew all the road numbers and was able to direct me back to the main road after I got totally lost.

I've only used it on two rides so far but it's definitely a keeper.

***Edit: 04/05/14: I've tried to route a fairly long trip (250 miles) and this Tyre software is absolutely maddening. Actually, scratch that, the way the TomTom handles the Tyre route is maddening, Tyre actually works really well. The TomTom will never, ever route the way you want, regardless of which method you choose. One of the turns on my route, which I have been on before and have seen with my very eyes in person, the TomTom insists that you cannot turn left at. Because of this, it sent my route 13 MILES down the road to an intersection and had me do a u-turn. Because of this behavior, one must carefully review every single facet of the route on the TomTom itself before setting off. If you have to correct something, just do it in Tyre and reupload it. You'll be ready for the loony bin by the time you correct a route on the unit. My suggestion is to put waypoints along each road so that the routes STAY on that road, then one a few hundred yards before, and a few hundreds yards after each turn. You could have hundreds of waypoints for a long ride. (Edit: 04/09/14: You CANNOT upload a route with more than 48 waypoints to the TomTom. True routing is not possible on this unit if you are doing a long trip. Which is where I want to do my routing. You'll have to split your route into smaller route files.) I'm not a fan of this setup and I'm baffled as to why the unit couldn't just navigate the route that's shown on the Tyre software. I won't drop a star for this, but I'm tempted to.

***Edit 04/12/14 I took this unit on the road today for a trip with my wife, and the Bluetooth connection to my headset failed mid ride, so I stopped getting instructions from the unit.

I purchased this TomTom rider as an upgrade to my Rider 2nd edition. The power button and screen are far more responsive than my older unit. I have only planned a few routes on the unit itself. First of all, it started up very quickly although it took 20 or 30 seconds to locate the GPS signal. The route, only about a 32 minute trip, was calculated within a few seconds. You are given the option to review the route in pictures or text before you complete it.
The user interface has been revised from my rider 2nd edition, it will take some getting used to, but all the main actions seem to be within a few clicks from the map screen.

I did update the software on the unit as soon as I pulled it out of the box, this may be the difference between mine and the previous reviewer, or perhaps they have a faulty unit.

I have briefly used the Tyre route planning software. I do like how it will interface with Google Earth and Google Maps. It also appears you can utilize routes downloaded from other users including users of Garmins.

I am looking forward to the Winding Roads options, I am mounting this one on a Ural Gear-Up, so the matte black complements this bike better than my old silver 2nd edition would have.

My only nitpicks so far are that they have revised the mount from 4 pins to 7, so I don't expect I can use it on the mount on my other bike or my car kit. But the RAM mount should make it easy to swap the mount itself and leave the wiring in place. My second nitpick is that TomTom only allows you to associate one divice with your account, so if you are supplementing another TomTom product you either have to swap the one associated with your account (allowed every 6 months) or create a second (third, fourth) account. This is a pain and I think TomTom should be able to come up with a better way to handle this. Lastly, I hope to see additional accessories for this one soon, including a car kit.
