4.0 out of 5 stars Took this over the One 3rd edition!
I've been lusting after many GPS systems the last 6 months but finally made my purchase today! This is my first GPS unit.

Let me first state that i've put the TomTom One LE through a 100 miles of testing already and im quite satisfied.

Its important to remember that this is an entry level system at a very good price ($139 if you look around)...

2.0 out of 5 stars special cheap edition
We got it for free from company event. If I paid for it, I would have returned it. There are a few things I don't like
1. The graphics looks cheap (compared to garmin's)
2. It doesn't have text to speech thus won't tell you street name (in voice), that is very annoying, I think visual confirmation is very important when you use a GPS.
3. First time power...

4.0 out of 5 stars Took this over the One 3rd edition!, December 11, 2007
This review is from: Tomtom One Limited Edition (Electronics)
I've been lusting after many GPS systems the last 6 months but finally made my purchase today! This is my first GPS unit.

Let me first state that i've put the TomTom One LE through a 100 miles of testing already and im quite satisfied.

Its important to remember that this is an entry level system at a very good price ($139 if you look around). Having said that, here is a run down of my experience with it:

1. The box is a pain to open. I tried to do it carefully but in the end I tore it apart in my excitement to get to the unit so there is no way id return the unit in its original packaging.

2. I opened it in my car, plugged it into my car's outlet, and powered it on. It took less than a minute to fully boot up, then it asked me to set my preferences. Quite simple to set up. These preferences can always be changed later or set later if you want to skip that part.

3. The windshield mount snaps onto the back of the unit and sticks to the windshield very well, i drove over some bumps to make sure.

4. Connectivity is good out in the open, even in some mildly foresty area it was good. I have not driven through a tunnel but im quite sure it will lose signal temporarily.

5. Installing the software on my MacBook Pro was very very easy, all i did was plug it in, pull up the disk and run the TomTom Home software installer. Next i backed up the unit, this took a little while because the backup file is nearly 1 GB. Be sure to have enough space on your hard disk. Next, i downloaded the update and installed it to the unit. Done with that. The unit will charge with the provided USB cable.

6. My development is not on the map, not in Google Maps either so im not surprised. I picked the nearest intersection to my house and set that as my home. Navigating through the menus is quite simple if you are competent in the least. When entering addresses/zip codes it can be a little hard to use the keyboard when mounted on the windshield, but a little patience and practice goes a long way. You can always pull it off the windshield and enter whatever you need. I think the touch screen sensitivity is quite good, the keyboard responds with the keys you want to press. The screen brightness is adjustable and quite good. I've set mine to 100% daytime and 0% nighttime and im satisfied with that. The setting to change the screen from daytime mode to nighttime mode is only 2 screens away, so the whole deal with the light sensor on the more expensive units is a waste in my opinion. Nothing wrong with changing the setting manually.

7. POIs are prety nice. It won't find you the nearest Wal-Mart or Macy's, but it will find you shopping centers, ATMs/Banks, Beaches, Parks, Restaurants, etc. You can find the ones closest to your current location, closest to a favorite location, closest to home, etc. Can't really ask for more from a basic GPS unit like this one.

8. I love how the unit is compact, not much larger than my wallet. The screen may appear small initially but i think it is quite adequate. The 3D view works well and i can see POIs quite clearly as im driving on a road.

9. Routing is fairly good, on rare occasions it will prompt you to make a U-turn when possible. If you miss a turn it will calculate an alternate route within 15 seconds. Avoiding a part of a route is also easy to do, just 2-3 menu screens away. If you want to be warned of a turn 2 miles before the turn needs to be performed, you can tell it to do so.

Finally, the word on the 'Latest map guarantee' and TomTom Map Share:

1. The latest map guarantee is available for 30 days from when you first use the unit.

2. The Map Share feature is free for only 1 year.

In conclusion, this is the unit to get if you are looking for a good basic GPS system to get you out of trouble. It'll work well if you have an address you need to get to, just put it in and be on your way. If you are stuck in traffic take a random exit and the unit will find you another way.

It will NOT find you every Wal-Mart around you, and it will not do text-to-speech meaning it will not say the street names (i don't think this feature is necessary at all, this unit will tell you the distance. If you are lusting for text-to-speech, once you start using this unit you'll get over it.)

I hope i've helped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great GPS, December 2, 2007

Just picked one of these up at Best Buy last week for $150.00 and it proved quite valuable for a road trip to multiple points in Michigan from Pittsburgh. I probably would have been late to a wedding without this product.

I was originally worried about this unit not having up to date maps and having to purchase new ones, thankfully that was not the case. Tom Tom now allows all users to download the latest updates for free with the included software (applies to all of the Tom Tom units now). You can also make map corrections yourself and share all of your updates with other Tom Tom users if you download the latest software for the device.

Wonderful basic unit to get from point A to B.

Estimated arrival times are a little slow in my experience but it's better to get some where sooner than you expect rather than later.

Highly recommend, download the updates weekly for best results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great entry level GPS, January 3, 2008
This review is from: Tomtom One Limited Edition (Electronics)
This is a great GPS unit. Easy to use, great routing and plenty of POIs. Just be sure to download the firmware upgrade and link to mapshare (both free of charge) before using. The downloads will be available automtaically when you link to TOMTOM HOME. After the upgrades, the unit works extremely well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent deal, December 29, 2007

This is the best value in under 200 GPS market.
Despite some initial problems with updating the firmware and whatever else TOMTOM home does, the unit performs admirably.
However, I can see why someone might run out of patience with the setup/update process.
I kept getting bizarre messages of the "You have no maps" type.
I ignored them, tried it a few more times and it finally did everything it should - I was able to set the preferences, download the latest firmware and the GPS fix. This last patch ensures a fast lock on the satellites and needs to be done weekly or so.
In the end, the problems with the update might have stemmed from an overwhelmed server, but everything is fine now...

We were fortunate enough to get the tomtom LE on sale for $119.00 the day after Thanksgiving, but knowing how great it is, it is definitely worth the $299.00 price. My husban is the one who drives the most and uses it, and it paid for itself and more the other day when there was considerable traffic on his way to work. He had already set his destination as his office, and at two different points during his commute, there were huge traffic jams. In both instances, he took random exits, and the tomtom automatically recaculated his route for him. Not only did it help him avoid traffic, but it saved him the stress of trying to navigate back roads and still reach your destination. On top of it all, he still got to work on time! This is a great product, and saves a lot of stress and worry when traveling.

We got it for free from company event. If I paid for it, I would have returned it. There are a few things I don't like

3. First time power up, it didn't work. Keep telling me my moving speed was 0 miles/hour, although we were in a car on the highway. It turned out to be the well known slow first time startup, but that was very disappointing.

If you are fine with all these, this is not bad. It is light, small and still usable.

4.0 out of 5 stars great a deal after the horror show, December 12, 2007
This review is from: Tomtom One Limited Edition (Electronics)
I got mine at BestBuy after blackFriday 07. It didn't work unless I pressed the reset button at the bottom. The customer service was great at TomTom. Turns out the software in the box was flawed and needs to be updated with the latest version. I also get the free map update with the 'latest map guarantee'. please not that map updates are NOT FREE. TomTom only guarantee you the latest maps at the time of purchase.

After searching on the Net, many people had similar problems like mine when they got the $119 LE at BestBuy

1.0 out of 5 stars Get Lost!, December 31, 2007

I got this unit for a bargain price of $139.00, which unfortunately is about $138.00 more than it's worth. The visual quality is good, and the directions--both spoken and displayed--are easy to follow. The problems I encountered were problems with the accuracy of the maps and the absolute senselessness of the route directions.

Two times in one 15 mile trip, the Tom Tom took me down streets that were not thru-ways, even though its map showed they were. It got so bad at one point I had to call a friend familiar with the area to get directions. Thanks, but I can get lost on my own without help from a navigation aid.

To compound the problem, often times the directions are just ludicrous. To get to a location across town, the Tom Tom took me a round-about way to the interstate, and then had me exit the interstate in downtown, even though my destination was 8 miles ahead on the interstate. No matter how I configured the route (fastest, shortest, etc.), the Tom Tom always took me off the interstate far away from my destination. Ironically, one method then had me get back on the interstate a couple of miles farther down. Agghhhh!

I borrowed a friend's Garmin unit, which performed flawlessly. I have to give the Tom Tom two thumbs down.

1.0 out of 5 stars I am very disappointed, December 7, 2007
This review is from: Tomtom One Limited Edition (Electronics)
I was very happy with Tomtom one 3rd edition. Since Tomtom LE has more features such as bluetooth and memory card slot I bought TOMTOM LE for my wife. But unfortunately i am very disappointed with TOMTOM LE. All 3 of my cell phones are not compatible to tomtom LE. So i can not use mapshare. Tomtom LE is very slow it takes atleast 15 minutes to connect to satilite. It freezes all the time. Customer service is not at all helpful. All they do is reset the system. I am tired of calling to TOMTOM's customer NO service. I am carrying a paper clip with Tomtom LE all the time that is how i reset the system. I bought extended (replaceble) warranty from bestbuy. If this continues i will return it.

I bought this one over the Garmin because its price. The map is good but it keeps losing signal to GPS. When I was driving in PG county, MD, it keeps getting message "Wait for a valid GPS signal". I have stop for 5 minutes before it can find the signal. I works good on Highway but suck on the small road. I just want to through it out of the windows sometimes. PIECE OF JUNK!
