Easy interface, no hassle connection, but weak transmitter,

This review is from: TomTom FM Transmitter Mount for the Go 510, 710, 910 (Electronics)
The hook up is as simple as it gets, just plug & play. The mount is the second-generation style that doesn't droop (at least for me). The transmitter leaves a lot to be desired. I bought this primarily to load up the extra 10+gb on my 910 with music and listen through the car stereo. Unfortunately, the transmitter is rather weak, and I have difficulty getting clear reception in any of my vehicles without some static. However, the tuner frequency is completely adjustable, so although I have tried about a dozen different settings there may be a "magic" one out there which will ultimately give me clear reception. I have 3 other modulators, and the TomTom device doesn't match their performance. It is also necessary to use a pretty high volume on the radio to hear the transmission when listening to music, and it doesn't sound as good as a CD or even standard FM broadcsts, but is about as good as you can expect from an FM modulator. Using the power cord helps transmission a lot, and is recommended by the manufacturer. Overall, excellent integrated design and a good product, but performance issues preclude an excellent rating.
EDIT - DON'T BUY: This thing has turned out to be a piece of plastic trash - mount is broken and the transmitter doesn't work any more. Only used it about 4 times. TomTom customer service is like banging my head against the wall - it felt a lot better after I finally gave up. Don't buy this item. Too bad I can't edit/revise my rating, I'd give it one star.

Does not work as advertised and will be a waste of your money!,

I paired this up with a TomTom 510 and an iPod cable kit. As soon as an iPod is connected, the FM transmission stops working and all audio is transmitted to the internal TomTom speakers. After wasting 2 months with TomTom customer support, I received the following response:
"Yes, we did receive your items. I've tested your scenario with your device and with our in-house devices. It appears to simply be a limitation of the TomTom product. Unfortunately, I do not have a fix for you. I've notified product management of the issue, however, there probably won't be a fix for the 510/910 models, as they are no longer being manufactured. Any fix would most likely be implemented with future products only." After mentioning that it explicitly states this is supposed to work with the TomTom 510, I received the following response: "That is, perhaps, a misnomer. I will forward this information on to our Product Management team for research. However, it simply doesn't function the way it was stated on the website." They also claimed to have tried it with in-house devices and it did not work for them either. If you somehow get this to work (as there seems to be many out there), feel lucky. If you don't, don't expect anything from the TomTom customer support, because apparently this "doesn't function the was it was stated on the website." Since Amazon has a 30 day return policy, I'm not very optimistic that I will get my full refund. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ITEM!!!

Mine drooped also ... until I realized I could turn the dial one more notch (turn hard)...it took care of the drooping as it locks the pivot...first notch merely locks suction...
More importantly: I love the 910...with the FM transmitter...I use it for Audiobooks through Audible.com and as others have noted regarding music, the book plays on FM, and pauses for directions and phonecalls (I use the Bluetooth with a Palm device as well) through the speaker phone. I'm on my third 910 - the first one was stolen after 3 days (make sure you get the Serial number off your device when you get it...believe it or not, none of the documentation has the serial #!), the second one was fried when I was sold the wrong car charger (it's 5 volt output, not 12V -- buy TomTom's!) and now the third...But that should tell you I think this is an A+++ product.

effective but not a very powerful FM transmitter,
This review is from: TomTom FM Transmitter Mount for the Go 510, 710, 910 (Electronics)
I used this product for a road trip from Boston to Dallas. It was very simple to set up. However I realized that the FM transmitter was not very powerful and that if you hit a pot hole hard enough the transmitter would shut off. Another thing related to the FM transmitter weakness was the fact that you had to turn the radio volume up fairly high to hear your ipod or the tom tom navigational voice directions playing through the FM transmitter. One thing i wish the system would allow is for you to charge your ipod through the fm transmitter. Espcially since the fm transmitter will connect to your ipod using the same port on your ipod to charge it. But it only connects it to both transmit the audio and control your ipod but it won't charge it.

FM Transmitter works great!,

Works just as advertised and only took a minute to set up. The longest part was trying to find a frequency on the radio that wasn't being used. Once you find a frequency you just type that into the TomTom and away you go. If you don't want to transmit (say you want to listen to Click and Clack) you can turn it on and off with a click to the TomTom screen. I either plug in my ipod or lately been downloading songs directly to the TomTom. Either way, sound is excellent and volume goes automatically when a course direction is being read. Also works great with my cell phone.

I have returned two of these now. Both defective. This mount will not hold the weight of the GPS unit. It droops down if you mount this on your windshield until it hits your dashboard. I would not purchase this item until the design is changed.

Finding empty FM stations,
This review is from: TomTom FM Transmitter Mount for the Go 510, 710, 910 (Electronics)
I don't have this exact transmitter, but I've tried others and find them to generally work pretty well as long as you find an adequately quiet empty station. Try this website to find the best empty stations in your area. http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/vacant

Our origunal mount broke so I bought this one to replace it. Still using it often for more than a year. The FM radio portion is merely OK, sometimes you get feedback noise on the radio.

TomTom FM Transmitter,
By
This review is from: TomTom FM Transmitter Mount for the Go 510, 710, 910 (Electronics)
I bought this to replace the OEM Mount that came with my GO 510. The basic functions work -- sticks to windshield and charges the GPS, but other functions don't seem to work as well. The FM transmitter has so much static that I can barely here the GPS spoken directions. I haven't been able to use the speaker phone (connected by bluetooth to my mobile phone) either using the built-in microphone or external microphone since I got it. I don't know if I can attribute this to the mount or not, but these features used to work.
