1. Hardware is great. Very easy to install and take down so the mount is not visible when parked. Love the suction cup.

2. Second to other comments. CoPilot Live USA is $4.95 in the app store and works great, so forget paying for TomTom software. It even gives you the option to completely mute, merely quiet, or simply speak on top of music. CoPilot is very sophisticated and has lots of options so you aren't missing much. I've read reviews that said it was better designed for ipod/iphone interface.

3. One thing - you must have the ipod connected on startup of ipod for CoPilot Live USA to recognize device. The ipod then recognizes that the device works with TomTom software, asks if you want to download. Say no and then fire up CoPilot. Works great.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I love my IPod touch, so I was very excited to get my TomTom Car Kit for it. I've used it for two weeks now, and I have mixed feelings.

Major First Point: You do have to purchase the TomTom application to use the Car Kit. Not a big deal... or so I thought. The ap costs $50 to download (US and Canada only; other countries are another $50 a shot), and that is definitely more than I would have spent if I known beforehand. I imagine over time (or at least I hope!) that this price will go down. Too late for me! I think I might have gone for a utilitarian, single-purpose GPS device which might cost a bit more had I researched first, if for anything else to avoid using the additional memory space on my IPod.

I have another IPod Touch holder in my car which plugs directly into a cigarette lighter, this one for when I want to listed to my music collection or an audiobook. There is apparently a cable available (but does not come with the kit) which can link the kit to the car stereo; I haven't been able to find any concrete information regarding it (at present, it is not listed among the kit's accessories on Amazon) and therefore I'm not sure if my '05 Santa Fe has an in-port for it to hook into. It might be a common cable. Obviously, I can't use both holders at once, so as it is, I could listen to music or a book over the kit's speaker, which offers a very clear voice for directions, but doesn't do Pearl Jam any justice. I will update my review when I find out more via our friend, Google. :^)

So far, the GPS experience has been terrific, but iffy on the destination end. The first three destinations I set into it were incorrect; one road was mislabeled, one road didn't exist, and the third destination was half a mile off from where I wanted to end. This is my first GPS, and I have a feeling that many GPS receivers have the same issues, as my experiences using [...] have intimated. I'm sure that such happenings will be fixed, and there will yet be new roads added, so nothing will ever be perfect, but it is good to know that this happens because generally the very last part of the trip is the part that we hope GPS will help us with.

The mount fits very nicely on my dashboard and is attractive. The kit comes with a plastic disc that I can mount on the dash, and the suction cup on the kit adheres to it nicely, and with a huge variety of angles. It doesn't interfere with my view of the road at all, and it is very easily removed from the disc for storage.

I am glad that I got the kit, and while I thought it was a steep price for an application that I also needed to buy, I know that I spent less to get a decent GPS system. I recommend that everyone look at some inexpensive GPS receivers before purchasing this kit, knowing that if have an IPod Touch, you might want to think about how you want to use it. I'm sure with the proper cables and such, you can manage the elements of IPod and GPS together (the music automatically decreases in volume when voice directions are being given, by the way!), but you may find it easier to have one GPS separate from the IPod. I'd give the device 3.5 stars if I could, but not four... not yet, anyway.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
One of the limitations of the iPod Touch is a lack of built-in GPS. If you're looking for a vehicle-based GPS, then the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch is well worth considering, given a few limitations.

First of all, you'll need to purchase navigation software from the iTunes AppStore - TomTom, Magellan, or my personal favorite (and highest rated) Navigon. Combined with the cost of this Car Kit, you'll still pay less than a standalone GPS unit, without sacrificing capabilities or performance. NOTE: if you don't buy the TomTom Navigator, make sure to download the FREE "TomTom Car Kit tool" app from the iTunes store. It will help you verify that the iPod Touch is properly mounted (more on that below) and will eliminate the warning message otherwise displayed when first connecting.

Like the corresponding TomTom Car Kit for iPhone, the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch is a clever design. It attaches to your windshield (or to the included adhesive-backed mounting plastic disc) with a tightening wheel to activate the suction mount. The iPod Touch docks in the TomTom kit where it is secured in place. Unlike the TomTom Kit for iPhone, there isn't enough tolerance provided to accommodate a case, so you'll have to remove your iPod Touch from any case before mounting. Once mounted, the TomTom Kit lets pivot the iPod Touch horizontally or vertically, and you can slide the position to evenly balance it. Very clever, and very steady even when driving.

Power is provided by a 12-volt adapter (which, nicely, is the same adapter that TomTom uses for their Go units, so spares are reasonably priced and easy to find). But, since the iPod Touch doesn't have built-in GPS, you are limited to using this in your vehicle (this is a limitation of the iPod Touch, not this kit).

Spoken directions are provided by the built-in speaker, which is sufficiently loud (comparable to standalone GPS units), and has a volume control on the mount. There is also a standard stereo audio (headphone) connector for routing to your car stereo, if it has audio-in capabilities. And, most of the iPod/iPhone Navigation software will speak directions over playing music (either by pausing or lowering the music volume to speak directions). But this again is a slight problem (again not a fault of this kit) - if you have connected this Kit to your car stereo, and are also connected by BlueTooth with your phone, you won't hear directions spoken if you're on the phone.

Why not a perfect rating? A few notes:
- the Tom Tom iPod Touch kit doesn't provide enough tolerance for even the slimmest of iPod Touch cases (the iPhone TomTom kit can handle cases)

- like the iPhone kit, I found that the iPod Touch doesn't always "connect" properly the first time - you may get an "unsupported accessory" warning, or just no GPS signal. It's easy enough to correct (just undock and re-dock), and the free TomTom car kit app helps you verify the docking was successful, in addition to showing GPS satellite lock. But I would expect the dock to work all the time. Perhaps this is a problem in the iOS itself (I'm running iOS 4.0.2), but it's nevertheless annoying when it does happen.

- Tom Tom doesn't include an audio cable, which would be nice especially since a right-mounted audio cable works better on this kit for cable clutter and balance

If you can accommodate these limitations, and the iPod Touch-imposed issues, then I would highly recommend the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch. It certainly allows you to consolidate devices (as long as you don't want a GPS you can use outside the car).
