5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful Universal Western
TOMAHAWK is one of a number of solid little colorful Universal Westerns produced in the early 1950s. With a good cast, including Van Helfin, Yvonne De Carlo, Preston Foster, Jack Oakie, and Susan Cabot, it reprises the popular Cowboys/Cavalry vs. Indians theme, with a favorable treatment of the Indians and references to "Red Cloud's War" of the later 1860s. Like many such...

3.0 out of 5 stars Peace treaty is violated and US Army responds: "Sioux me!"
Set in Wyoming in 1866, TOMAHAWK features mountain man Jim Bridger.

After gold is discovered on Sioux land, the U.S. Army's plans to open up the Bozeman Trail anger the natives, whose previous treaty had already been violated when an unauthorized fort was built. Jim Bridger (Heflin) tries to keep a tense situation from escalating into all-out war, but when an...

Like many such films of the period, TOMAHAWK is not going to be found in any "top ten" lists; but it does provide loads of excitement, action, and enjoyment to Western fans. The color Technicolot print is vivid and very good for this DVD-R issue. No add ons, but that's okay. Recommended--and let's hope Universal will release more of these little gems!

This review is from: Tomahawk [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Set in Wyoming in 1866, TOMAHAWK features mountain man Jim Bridger.

After gold is discovered on Sioux land, the U.S. Army's plans to open up the Bozeman Trail anger the natives, whose previous treaty had already been violated when an unauthorized fort was built. Jim Bridger (Heflin) tries to keep a tense situation from escalating into all-out war, but when an Indian-hating cavalry lieutenant (Nicol) murders a young Sioux the tribe prepares for battle. (Watch for Rock Hudson in a peripheral role, as Burt Hanna.)

As of 1/09, "Tomahawk" was not available on DVD.

Pretty darned good cavalry western with enough scenery and action to hold the attention. Good cast and good quality for an on demand DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for its era, November 19, 2011

Fairly interesting Hollywood exageration/blending/confusion of historical facts. If you overlook all of the details that don't match reality, this is an entertaining movie.

For those of us who live in South Dakota and know the areas where this was filmed, it's fun to see the landscape.
