4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful coming of age story, October 26, 2009

Diane S Bauden is a brilliant author who does not disappoint with this tale. I wont re-hash the story as this has already been done capably by one of the reviewers.
This is a beautiful coming of age story with adolescent misunderstandings and hormones driving a wedge between Erin and Jackson. As both women go through life one thing is ever-present; their love for one another. First love is sometimes strong enough to overcome all obstacles.
The author gives us complex and multi faceted characters, the commentry is realistic and flows with ease. Although the book jumps from past to present day to tell the whole story this is smooth in transition and detail.
I purchased the eBook version of this book from Intaglio and was able to convert it with ease to read on my Sony Reader and Amazon Kindle. There are some gramatical and spelling errors within the book (the eBook version) but this does not detract too much from the story. If these had been proofed out of the book I would have been happy to give the book a five star.

I have re-read this at least 4 times since the initial read. I really liked the way you shiffed back and forth in time. The true feeling between the characters was well developed and the love scenes between them were right on. I look forward to reading more of Ms Bauden's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girls Gone Wild (Sort of), December 1, 2008

Opening with two young girls meeting for the first time, `Tomahawk'd' is a wonderful book that tracks the lives of Jackson Thomas and Erin Hawkins as they grow into womanhood. For the record, I've always been a fan of Bauden so this review might appear a little biased. She has an incredible imagination which spills over into her characters and stories, making them both unique and lovable.

Jackson Thomas lives with her aunt, the owner/operator of The Northwoods Island City, a vacation resort on Tomahawk Lake. She's a precarious youngster who is as `tom-boyish' as they come. Her favorite place is on a roof overlooking the lake, and she spends lots of time there. Erin Hawkins and her family come to the resort one summer for vacation. Erin takes immediately to Jackson, but Erin's judgmental mother inherently disapproves of their friendship. Over the years, Erin's family continues to visit the lake and the girls' friendship grows. That is... until Mrs. Hawkins discovers the true nature of their relationship and separates them `permanently.'

Move to present-day Chicago... Jack is a music teacher and Erin is a famous artist. Jack's aunt is dying and wants to see Erin, so Jack reluctantly calls her old friend. To her surprise, Erin is delighted with the call... especially since she's going through a divorce and needs a shoulder of support. A series of open discussions and admissions leads the duo in directions they never before imagined.

I highly recommend this great book with dimensional main characters, colorful supporting characters, and an imaginative story line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised, October 7, 2011

I really enjoyed the two main characters and several of the supporting cast also, mother excluded. There is angst, discovery, denial, and love all wrapped up in this story. The story line is interwoven with flashbacks of the two characters growing up together during summer vacations and normally I do not like a story line written like that, but I found it flowed very well and kept me hanging on to find out how things are worked out. The author manages to tease the reader with waiting to find out what happens on several occasions with the characters. I would defintely recommend this and I am disappointed that I have yet to find any other works by this author.
