About the Author

Mary Verdant is an avid gardener. She finds wonder in the simple miracles of life, like planting a seed, watering it, and tasting the wonderful fruits (and vegetables) of her labors.

She attained a degree in horticulture at Merritt College in Oakland California. Since then she has helped her clients plant gardens and learn about the wonders of growing food.

One of her favorite experiences is the look on a child's face when they first bite into a ripe, beautiful tomato that the grew themselves!

She has helped create beautiful and bountiful gardens in California, North Carolina, England, and Hawaii - and her books have inspired gardeners all over the world.

Her goal is to simplify gardening. She understands how very easy it is to create and grow a garden (especially in containers) and she writes in order to inspire everyone - young and old - healthy and healing - to grow their own gardens and discover how easy, fun and nurturing a garden can be.

She focuses on getting straight to the point - so her books are short and clear. She wants you to be out planting and harvesting, not sitting inside reading a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Tomato Gardening Info March 28, 2012
By JP
Format:Kindle Edition
Years ago I had the most wonderful tomato balcony garden. I started it at the recommendation of a co-worker who was a real gardening buff. Before that I truly hated tomatoes. I had no idea that tomatoes could actually be delicious! Trust me, the ones that come out of your garden taste nothing like what you get from the stores. My favorites were the small cherry tomatoes. They were oh so sweet. I had several terra cotta pots of those. Sadly they were all given up when I moved. At the thought of once again creating a balcony tomato garden I found this book and am really getting jazzed again at the prospect of having my garden going!

The book covers pot selection, plat selection, soil selection, fertilization, and many tips to maximize your harvest. I wasn't expecting to see tomato recipes but found several good ones in this book. If you love tomatoes get this book! If you have no space and want to creat a mini tomato garden it can be done and this book tells you how. There is even a section on building a self-watering container. The photos are sharp and really bring the book to life. For the low price this book costs it is well worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Information; Needs an Editor July 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Replete with errors, but I'm keeping it anyway for the excellent tomato advice, including links to websites. Even a "How To" book can/should be well written.

One vital error: author lists varieties of hybrid and heirloom tomatoes. But she switches the list, so the hybrids are heirloom varieties and vice versa.
