Editorial Reviews

"What you hold in your hands is the culmination of more than two years of work and musical exploration. It contains all the musical elements I love, wrapped up neatly together - mysterious textures, evocative percussion and thematic developments to die for.

It's been wonderful accompanying Lara through her first adventure. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed composing it." Jason Graves/Composer

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Art March 7, 2013
By KGFan
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Jason Graves has truly created some fantastic pieces of music, and listening to this makes me even more excited to play the game. The most interesting aspect of the soundtrack is that Graves actually had someone construct a brand new instrument to create the various sounds and moods of the island in the game, and it sounds not only incredible, but it can at times give you chills down your spine. The longer tracks I find to be the best ones, though I wish the entire piece that was used for the CG trailer was included in this collection. Also, to those who buy the Collector's Edition of the game, you're getting ten tracks from this soundtrack with the CD you got in that set, so if you want a more complete soundtrack, you'll have to buy this one to get the ten tracks you don't have. That isn't a slam to the Collector's Edition of the game, but I thought I'd let you know since many will be curious as to what tracks are contained within that CD and of course you're getting everything else that comes with it. This soundtrack is completely worth your purchase and has my strongest recommendation.

Via Sumthing Else Music Works and in conjunction with Square Enix, BAFTA-winning composer Jason Graves accomplishes the first Tomb Raider video game soundtrack release in 17 years of the franchise with the publication of the "Tomb Raider: Original Soundtrack". To much anticipation from fans, old and new, the official release of this body of music marks a triumph in the growing video game music industry. The demand as a collectible is maximally quenched - it is no surprise that the first batch of the physical Audio CD sold out at launch March 5th, 2013! I am delighted to have one of them. Hopefully this is some indication as to how deserving the other 8+ Tomb Raider soundtracks are of their own music albums.

I run the official Tomb Raider fan-site, Music of Tomb Raider (.com), and have followed the amalgamation of this impending release since the game was announced in December 2010. Right until correspondence with Graves himself, 1 year before the announcement of his involvement in the project on November 30th, 2012. I have documented every piece of news and musical sample on the aforementioned site. It has grown into a sub-community in the Tomb Raider universe, something magical that I had never fully intended. Please feel free to visit!

The rating I have given takes into account the 10 out of the 20 tracks from this album that are available via Sumthing Digital to the owners of the Collector's and Survival Edition(s) of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tomb Raider April 7, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Video game music is truly unique in its construction and presentation, because unlike musical scores for films and television, its composer must in many cases develop a narrative to either accompany or drive the game's story while being careful not to be too repetitive in spite of video games' recurrent themes. Thus, when composers are able to effectively change their style to meet completely different gaming genres, or continue scoring for similar genres by developing their own work, one can't help but take notice. My introduction to Jason Graves's genius was with 2008's Dead Space, truly one of the most frightening gaming experiences I've had to date. So seamless was the melding of Graves's music with Dead Space's desolate, terror-wrought environments and action-packed moments that I almost hadn't been able to recall the music independently at all. 2011's Dead Space 2 furthered this sense of perfection as Graves evolved his work to create simultaneous fear and loneliness, a sense of which hadn't been garnered in the first game. Graves's score for this year's Dead Space 3 completely turned a corner, abandoning some of the more tense and threatening elements to incorporate bombastic melodies reminiscent of modern Hans Zimmer, lending a life and emotional bond to the Dead Space 3 universe that wasn't present in either prior outing. And yet in between it all, Graves composed the lion's share of 2011's Dungeon Siege III, a wondrous and beautiful score containing so many dense and rich layers of melancholic string orchestration that I questioned many times how the same man could have shattered gamers' psyches with the work on Dead Space and its sequel. 4.0 out of 5 stars A work that captures the character... July 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The first time I played this game, I noticed that the music blended in with it seamlessly. I hardly even noticed it. The arrangements are among some of the best that I've ever heard from a video game soundtrack, and Graves's style is truly unsurpassed by other game soundtrack composers.

The game music reminded me of the movies scores. I liked it enough to hit repeat on the album at work.
