This review is from: Tomb Raider Tankobon Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
Lara Croft-Tomb Raider is a hard character to get wrong. Start with Indiana Jones, mix in the English charm of James Bond and wrap it up in Cindy Crawford's body.
After two volumes of solid action and adventure this book is a bit of a miss. Reprinting 10 issues of the Tomb Raider comic this book starts with a new quest, a new lover interest for Lara and a new foe. But then it abandons that for a long, convoluted crossover with other Top Cow characters like Witchblade, Darkness and Evo. It involves time travelers from the 50th century, the Witchblade, Lara turning into a glowy-haired monster and it makes no sense. Then the last three chapters pit Lara against an Egyptian pharaoh in the afterlife and are certainly a step up. The art is good throughout the book but the reproduction leaves a lot to be desired. Especially during the cross-over issues the art is muddy, it looks like a photocopy of a color picture and is very hard to follow. So far this had been the weakest volume, disjointed, muddy art and almost half of it makes no sense. I hope the next volume will return to the previous high quality. |
