Book Description

Images of America: Arizona July 21, 2003
Tombstone sits less than 100 miles from the Mexico border in the middle of the picturesque Arizona desert and also squarely at the heart of America's Old West. Silver was discovered nearby in 1878, and with that strike, Tombstone was created. It soon grew to be a town of over 10,000 of the most infamous outlaws, cowboys, lawmen, prostitutes, and varmints the Wild West has ever seen. The gunfight at the O.K. Corral made Wyatt Earp and John Henry "Doc" Holliday legendary and secured Tombstone's reputation as "The Town Too Tough to Die." In this volume, more than 200 striking images and informative captions tell the stories of the heroes and villains of Tombstone, the saloons and brothels they visited, the movies they inspired, and Boot Hill, the well-known cemetery where many were buried. About the Author

Award-winning historian Jane Eppinga, the author of previous Arcadia titles on Tucson and Nogales, has written several books and hundreds of articles on Arizona and Wild West history. Largely culled from the Arizona Historical Society and several privately held collections, the photographs featured here are a fascinating glimpse into one of the towns that fueled the enduring mythology of the Wild West.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great photos but rife with inaccuracies, May 28, 2008
By
This review is from: Tombstone (Images of America: Arizona) (Paperback)
Jane Eppinga tackles Tombstone in the Images of America series and comes up with a visually pleasing but factually inaccurate endeavor.

Eppinga delves into Tombstone's early days, both related and non-related to the OK Corral gunfight, most notably giving a nod to Fort Huachuca and it's importance to southern Arizona.

In the OK Corral section, she makes several errors: she refers to Bat Masterson as "Pat"; she states that Virgil Earp was ambushed 2 weeks after the OK Corral gunfight (it was about 2 months); that Morgan Earp's wife Louisa accompanied his casket back to California (she was in California when Morgan was murdered and remained there until his body arrived); that during the OK Corral shootout, Frank McLaury wounded Virgil Earp in the arm, "leaving it useless for life" (Virgil suffered a calf wound at the OK Corral...the crippling of his arm happened during the above-mentioned ambush); that Judge Wells Spicer drowned in 1881 (Spicer disappeared in 1887...most believed it was suicide).

The book is worth buying just for the photos (though she skimps in some spots by using photos that are far lower quality than the same photos in other books), but the buyer is warned regarding the shoddy fact checking.

As a freelance historical research photographer, I thoroughly enjoyed the written and photographic aspects of this book. This book on Tombstone has been very well researched and provides the reader with the necessary information without becoming a college textbook. It also provides the reader with numerous photos to accompany the written information. It is a nice addition to my 19th century collection of books.

Both Fort Huachuca and the Apaches of southern Arizona are relevant to Tombstone's story, for without either one there might not have been the discovery of the rich silver mining camp of Tombstone. Read the first page
