This is THE best rat trap I've ever used! I don't have to worry about smashing my fingers by accident while trying to get it into position; to set this one you just step on the back of it (or you can squeeze it with your hand). I don't set it off by accident as I'm trying to maneuver it into position; this one isn't on a hair trigger like the old fashion kind. Meerly jostling it won't set it off. The rat can only approach from the desired side so there is no chance of him being tossed away from the trap as can happen with the old fashion kind. Best of all, there is virtually NO WAY for a rat to get to the bait without setting this thing off - every time! That's because the bait is positioned such that he must press the lever to get to it. It's also positioned such that they never get "kinda" caught. Lastly, those "teeth" pretty much insure that he's not going anywhere.

With the regular trap I had more sprung traps that caught rats. With this trap I got one within the 1st hour of setting it out, over and over and over again! It works!

I pretty much agree with everything said in the other reviews here. I've been using these for a few months and have caught seven rats so far. These traps are extremely good at catching rats -- I've never had a trap go off without catching a rat. This is important because you don't want the rats to get trap-shy.

On the other hand, it seems to be only about 50% of the time that the rat's head is inserted in the trap. I would imagine these are relatively quick kills. The other half of the time, the rat gets caught by a forelimb and can live in torment for hours or days. I happened to check a garage trap soon after a rat was caught this way, and the situation was horrifying to say the least. I ended up drowning the squeaking, terrified rat in a basin just to put it out of its misery.

I'm not deducting any stars for this because I'm not convinced that the traditional type of snap trap is any better. In other respects, these traps have it all over the traditional bar traps. They are very easy to set and never go off by accident while you're placing the traps. The bait cup is removable and well-positioned. Not only have I never had a trap go off without catching a rat, but I've also never had bait stolen.

I get the impression that trap positioning has a lot to do with the way the rat ends up getting caught. With traditional trap positioning along walls, I don't think the rat is necessarily even after the bait in many cases -- it just happens to blunder into the trap as it's going about its business. I'm hoping that with more intelligent positioning, I'll be able to reduce the number of limb-traps.

Several reviewers have reported problems with this trap, such as the trap not being strong enough to actually kill the rat. I wonder how many times this happened to each of these reviewers before they concluded the trap doesn't work properly. No trap works perfectly every time, but I've had a lot of experience with rat traps, and I can assure you this one works better than most.

I've deployed six different types of traps: two types of glue traps, the old standby classic by Victor, a knock-off of the Victor, an elaborate and beautifully designed, Japanese-made cage to trap them alive, a second kind of live trap, and the Tomcat. I've caught quite a few rats, so I can claim a little expertise on this subject.

As I said, no trap will work perfectly every time in every situation, or they wouldn't have invented so many different types--we'd all just use the classic wood-and-metal type, which doesn't cost very much, and be happy and rat-free. Each has its purpose--except for some that in my experience don't work: I haven't caught a single rat in the cheap Victor-type knock-off. In all of the others, I have, but the Tomcat has been the most successful. So I assure you, it does work, at least when I've use peanut butter as bait.

Second, it it easy to set. No need for worries about getting your fingers caught (and some of these traps can inflict some real pain). Once the trap is cocked open, it stays open; you don't have to be super-careful every time you get within two feet of it for fear it's going to snap. The bait is inserted into a removable little tube, so you can take the tube out, put in the bait, put it back in without setting the trap, or even while the trap is already set, without a problem.

Have been trying to rid my garden of one large roof rat for 3 weeks. I won't use glue traps because those guarantee a slow painful death. Was reluctant to go the poison route because the neighbors cat likes to hangout in my yard. Tried the traditional wooden snap trap but the rat managed to take the peanut butter off without ever triggering the trap. It just became his own little buffet. I bought one of these Tomcat Rat Snap Traps, loaded it with peanut butter (his drug of choice) and set it in the garden. Not 20 minutes later there was a loud snap that was clearly audible inside the house (so I assume this thing has some tension). I went out to check and there the big guy was, dead as a doornail. Planning on resetting this this because I figure if there's one there's more.
