Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this 128-page anthology of 37 Bible stories and prayers, dePaola wisely works from the New International Version, the contemporary translation of the Bible, to make these tales accessible to young readers. Jonah in the whale, Noah and his animal pairs headed for the ark, Moses with the burning bush: all are presented in an appealing style, with well-integrated details that enrich the telling. Those who already love dePaola and his trademark characters will be predisposed to appreciate this comprehensive collection. All ages.

From School Library Journal

K Up-- A collection of 17 stories from the Old Testament, 15 from the New Testament, and 4 psalms. The text is from the New International Version, which is currently among the best-selling editions of the Bible and is written in clear, straightforward language. dePaola uses the text as written with some abridgement to make the stories an appropriate length. Done in his typical style, the illustrations feature stylized people and objects. His children are as winsome looking as ever, but the adults convey sincerity and trust through both facial expressions and body positions. He also makes good use of architectural and decorative detail. There are several illustrations for each story, many of which are full page, and most make dramatic use of color. The large format enhances the impact of the pictures. Like Mother Goose and fairy-tale collections, editions of Bible stories by respected illustrators abound, but this edition should find a place on most shelves as an excellent choice for family or group use as well as for independent reading. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia

More About the Author

"Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.
It drove him through the years of teaching, designing greeting cards and stage sets, and painting church murals until 1965, when he illustrated his first children's book, Sound, by Lisa Miller for Coward-McCann. Eventually, freed of other obligations, he plunged full time into both writing and illustrating children's books.
He names Fra Angelico and Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as major influences on his work, but he soon found his own unique style. His particular way with color, line, detail, and design have earned him many of the most prestigious awards in his field, among them a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota for his ""singular attainment in children's literature,"" the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his ""continued distinguished contribution,"" and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. He was also the 1990 United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration.
Tomie dePaola has published almost 200 children's books in fifteen different countries. He remains one of the most popular creators of books for children, receiving more than 100,000 fan letters each year.
Tomie lives in an interesting house in New Hampshire with his four dogs. His studio is in a large renovated 200-year-old barn.
- He has been published for over 30 years.
- Over 5 million copies of his books have sold worldwide.
- His books have been published in over 15 different countries.
- He receives nearly 100,000 fan letters each year.

By combining the text of the NIV Bible with illustrations by Tomie De Paola, this book vividly portrays the story of Christianity from creation through the crucifixion and resurrection to the coming of the Holy Spirit. Children of all ages will be drawn to these stories with their beautifully drawn illustrations. The color, simplicity and depth in the illustrations immediately connect the text to a mental image and make the stories come alive. This is a wonderful book to give to any child.

I've been in love with Tomie de Paola's work since I first read Stregenona. When I was searching for bibles and story books about Jesus for my son, I found this book of bible stories by Tomie de Paola and was really excited. My husband was worried the stories wouldn't be accurate, but as we read the book we were pleasantly surprised by the accurate telling of the stories of this bible paired with the gorgeous illustrations of Tomie de Paola. Great story book, I'd love to have a hardcover version. Timeless, classic, and a wonderful addition to any and every children's library.

Wtih dePaola's beautiful, iconic illustrations, the words of the New International Version of the Bible come alive. He has taken some of the most important stories (for instance, Noah and the ark, Adam and Eve, Moses, Jesus's birth and resurrection) in the Bible and made them appealing to children. DePaola's illustrations are never "cute", never cloying, but bright, crisp, and reverent.

If you haven't seen any of dePaola's work, this is a great place to begin. The Bible stories are brought to life with such Grace and creative genius. Surely God smiled as dePaola took to the drawing board.

Tomie DePaola was my favorite author when I was first learning to read, and now that I'm a mom, I'm very glad to be able to share my love for him with my kiddo. The stories are easy to follow for growing minds and they maintain the heart of what the Bible had to say, and the colors and illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
